Gameday Game Recap:
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/04/09)--
Concordia needed every one of Katelyn Dold's three goals on Sunday as the Cobbers rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the second period to claim a 5-5 overtime tie with St. Olaf. The game was a non-conference contest between the two MIAC teams. It also completed a three-game weekend for CC which saw them post a win, a loss and a tie. The tie pushes Concordia's season record to 7-3-1. The Oles are now 3-5-1 overall.
The Cobbers jumped on the board first when Emily Sell scored her fourth goal in the past two games. Her tally at 8:03 of the first period gave CC a 1-0 lead. That lead would hold up until the final minute of the opening period. That's when the Oles scored a pair of goals just :13 seconds apart. St. Olaf tied the game at 19:27 and then took a 2-1 lead into the break with their second goal at 19:40.
St. Olaf would then add a third goal in the first minute of the second period. They scored a short-handed goal at the :56 second mark to up their lead to 3-1 and record their third goal in 1:29 of play.
The Oles then made it 4-1 at the 5:37 mark. It looked as if Concordia would stumble into the second intermission down by three goals and in serious trouble of losing two of their three games on the weekend against teams with losing records. That's when Dold donned her Superwoman cape and rescued the team from the brink of defeat. She scored her first goal of the game with just :02 seconds left in the second period. The power play goal was her first of the season.
Concordia was unable to cut into the 4-2 lead in the first nine minutes of the final period. Kaylee Black brought CC to within one goal when she netted her third goal of the year at 9:16. Dold then tied the game at 11:17 and the Cobbers looked as if they would be able to come away with an improbable win. St. Olaf then answered Concordia's three straight goals by notching the go-ahead score at 11:17.
The score stayed at 5-4 in favor of the Oles until Dold tied the game for good with 5:20 to play in regulation. The two teams then skated through the final minutes of the third period and the five-minute overtime frame without scoring a goal.
Concordia outshot the Oles 35-33 in the game. The Cobbers were 2-for-8 on the power play while the Oles were 1-for-4. Cobber goalie Julie York made 28 saves and is now 4-2-1 on the year. St. Olaf split the goaltending duties. Erin McNamara played the first two periods and stopped 18 shots. Corbin Ruiz entered at the start of the third period and made 12 saves in the final 25 minutes.
The Cobbers will continue with their non-conference action when they host Adrian (Mich.) in a two-game series on Friday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. Both game will be played at the Moorhead Sports Center.
