Gameday Series Recap:

MEQUON, Wis. (1/03/09)-- Concordia scored a season-high seven goals and was able to come away with a series split at Concordia University on Saturday. The Cobbers' 7-0 win was the most lopsided of the season and largest margin of victory since the 2002-03 season when they blasted Hamline 12-1. CC is now 7-3 overall.

The win was in stark contrast to Friday's 6-3 loss when Concordia allowed the Falcons to score five unanswered goals in the second and third periods to rally for the three-goal win. The Cobbers took a 3-1 lead on Friday but then crumbled in the final two periods to give Concordia University their second win of the year. On Saturday, the Cobbers refused to let the Falcons pull the same feat. After scoring three goals in the first period, CC then added one in the second period and then three more in the third.

Concordia sophomore Emily Sell broke out of her scoring slump by scoring a hat trick on Saturday. Sell, who is the record holder for points in a high school career in North Dakota, scored the game-winning goal just :39 second into the first period. She then added her second goal at 8:29 of the opening frame and her third in the beginning of the third period. All three were even-strength goals. She entered the game with only one goal on the year.

Becca Kent and Mandi Samuelson had two goals each in the game. Kent upped her team-leading goal total to six. She now has six goals and three assists for nine points.

Cobber senior Amber Malcolm stopped all 27 shots she faced to pick up her first career shutout. CC outshot the Falcons 48-27 for the game.

On Friday, Concordia held a 42-36 advantage in shots on goal. The Cobbers gave up the five straight goals after taking a 3-1 lead at 18:34 of the first period. Kent and Samuelson both got a single goal in the period. They were joined by Kayla Thorson who notched her third goal of the year at 7:54 of the first frame.

The turning point in the series opener came at the start of the second period when Concordia University scored a pair of shorthanded goals just :54 seconds apart. The back-to-back goals tied the game and then the Falcons scored three goals in the second half of the third period to earn the win.

Maddie Haroldson made 30 saves in the losing effort.

Concordia will finish off the opening weekend of 2009 by playing at St. Olaf in a non-conference game on Sunday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. in Northfield.
