Gameday Game Recap:
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (12/05/08)--
Concordia allowed three unanswered goals after the first period and fell 5-1 at St. Olaf on Friday. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Cobbers. It is also the first conference loss of the year for CC who fall to 5-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in conference play. The loss is also another at the hands of the Oles. The Cobbers have not posted a win against St. Olaf in the last fives games and in nine of the last 10.
St. Olaf (2-4-0/2-3-0 MIAC) used the perfect recipe to pick up the win on Friday. They scored a pair of goals in the first period and then held the powerful Cobber offense off the board for the final 40 minutes of play. The Oles got goals at 9:34 and 15:36 of the first frame before Concordia was able to get on the board at the 18:26 mark. Junior Kayleee Black notched her second goal of the season on an assist from Kristyn Voegele. The goal helped CC carry the momentum into the second period.
The Oles quickly squashed any momentum had when they scored two goals in less than 2:30 in the first 10 minutes of play in the second period. Concordia was hoping to repeat their performance in their win against St. Mary's when they got behind 2-0 but then stormed back to score five straight goals and win 5-2. St. Olaf wouldn't entertain of those notions as a goal at 6:37 and then another at 9:06 put the Cobbers into a three-goal hole - an obstacle they could never overcome.
The Oles tacked on an empty-net goal in the final minute of play in the third period to push the final score to 5-1. For the game Concordia outshot St. Olaf 28-24. That total included the first period where CC held a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal but came away on the wrong end of a 2-1 score.
Cobber goalie Julie York started the game and made eight saves in the first 29:06 of the game. She allowed four goals. Maddie Haroldson played the final 26:31 and stopped all 11 shots she faced. St. Olaf goalie Jessica Ptachick turned aside 27 shots to earn the win.
The two teams will complete their two-game series in Northfield on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m.
