Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/21/08)--
It took Concordia two goals and 10:23 to wake up and start playing but once they got out of bed they were able to score five unanswered goals and beat St. Mary's 5-2 in Moorhead on Friday. With the win the Cobbers have now won three straight and remain unbeaten in MIAC play at 3-0. CC moves to 4-1 overall.
Concordia conceded two goals in the first 10:23 of the opening period and both came on 5-on-3 penalty kill situations. The Cobbers allowed the first goal of the game at 4:25 after they had been whistled for a checking penalty and then a cross checking minor. St. Mary's (1-5-0/0-3-0 MIAC) took advantage of the power play when Sheree Haslemore scored her team-leading third goal of the year at 4:25. The Cardinals would repeat that scenario when Alex Braun's shot from the point found its way into the back of the net at 10:43 with CC once again trying to kill of a 5-on-3 situation.
The game changed in a 4:36 stretch towards the end of the first period. After not being able to get the puck out of their own zone in the first part of the frame, Concordia started to hold the puck in the Cardinal end and create offensive chances. CC was rewarded for their pressure when Becca Kent scored her first collegiate goal off of an assist from Kayla Thorson. The goal at 14:04 would be Kent's first of two on the night.
Kayla Hendrickson then brought the Cobbers level when she scored an unassisted goal at 16:30. It was Hendrickson's second goal of the year. Thorson then finished off the trio of goals when she smacked home a rebound at 18:40. Kent was credited with the assist as the two traded goals and assists from the Cobber first goal of the game.
The second period was all Concordia as they outshot the Cardinals 21-5. However, CC was only able to manage one goal and clung to a 4-2 lead to start the third period. Kristyn Voegele got control of the puck just inside the St. Mary's blue line and took two strides forward before letting go with a wrist shot that sailed over the shoulder of SMU goalie Madeline Lenz and into the top part of the net to give the Cobbers a 4-2 lead at 8:53 of the middle frame.
The game was put out of reach in the first two minutes of the third period. Kent jumped on a loose puck in the neutral zone and then skated into the St. Mary's end. Just after she skated past the blue line she flipped an innocent-looking shot towards the SMU goal. Unfortunately for the Cardinals her shot hit an SMU defender's stick and after it bounced took a weird hop that eluded Lenz and rolled into the net.
From the there Concordia was content to throw the puck into the middle of the ice and force St. Mary's to have to try and beat three CC defenders at all times.
The Cobbers ended the game by outshooting St. Mary's 40-23. CC goalie Julie York made 21 saves to earn her third win of the year. Lenz turned aside 35 shots in the losing effort. Concordia went 1-for-5 on the power play while SMU was 2-for-9 on the man-advantage situations for the entire game but 0-for-5 after the first period. One of the biggest statistical differences came in faceoffs won. The Cobbers held a 44-24 edge in faceoffs won and that helped CC control the puck in each zone by the goal.
The two teams will finish off the series on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
