Gameday Game Recap:
SUPERIOR, Wis. (10/31/08)--
Concordia wasted little time in posting a significant result in 2008-09. In the very first game of the season the Cobbers rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the second period and edged No.6 ranked UW-Superior 2-1 in Superior, Wis. It marks the first time in program history that Concordia has posted a win over a non-conference ranked opponent. The Yellowjackets lose for the first time in 2008-09 after making it to the NCAA Final Four last season.
The Cobbers continued their trend from last season when they earned a spot in the MIAC playoffs. CC used just enough offense and an air-tight defense to post 10 wins in 2007-08. The first game of the 2008-09 season stayed true to that form as Concordia needed only two goals to beat the Yellowjackets who were the prohibitive favorite to win the NCHA in the preseason conference coaches poll.
Superior got on the board first midway through the opening period. Jessica Tyra was finally able to poke home a rebound after CC goalie Julie York made initial saves on shots from Shana Katz and Kim Schmeichel. Tyra's goal at 11:53 was her first of the season. York made sure the Cobbers would stay close as she stopped 14 of the 15 shots she faced in the first period.
Concordia scored the game-tying goal at 7:30 of the second period. Cobber junior Kaylee Black took a pass from Brit Vander Kooy and was able to get inside the shoulder of the Superior defender and fire a shot past the goalie. The teams skated the rest of the way through an even second period. After being outshot 15-9 in the opening 20 minutes, the Cobbers and Yellowjackets were dead even in shots at 9-9 in the second frame.
The Cobbers turned the game around in the third period, outshooting Superior 10-8 in the final 20 minutes. They also netted the lone goal of the period which turned out to be the game winner. Sophomore transfer Emily Sell picked a perfect time to get her first goal in maroon and gold when she slammed home a rebound at 13:28. Sara Sonnenberg took the first shot that was stopped but Sell was able to control the puck and remain calm to record the all-important second goal for CC.
The best chance for Superior to gain an equalizer was in the last three minutes when they had a 5-on-3 power play. The Cobber penalty kill unit was strong all night long and kept the Yellowjackets off the board late in the game. CC killed off all seven power play attempts in the game.
In the end, Superior outshot Concordia 32-28. Neither team could score on the power play. The Cobbers were 0-for-2, while the Yellowjackets went 0-for-7. York finished the game with 31 saves and Superior goalie Melissa Kunzelman made 26 saves.
The same two teams will finish off their two-game non-conference series on Saturday, Nov, 1 at 2 p.m.
