Gameday Game Recap:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (3/01/08)-- Despite scoring two goals 1:08 apart in the third period, Concordia was unable to overcome a three-goal third period and lost to St. Thomas 4-2 in the semifinals of the MIAC playoffs in Mendota Heights on Saturday. The Cobbers finish their breakout season with a 10-12-2 overall record but were 10-6-2 in conference play and finished third in the league standings. The Tommies improve to 21-5 and advance to the MIAC title game for the sixth straight season where they will play at regular-season champion Gustavus on Wednesday.
The two teams skated through the first two periods and managed only one goal but then erupted for five goals in the final 20 minutes of play. St. Thomas grabbed a 1-0 lead 7:37 into the second period when Kelly Fallen scored her 12th goal of the year.
The 1-0 score line lasted until midway through the third period when Marie Omann gave the Tommies a 2-0 lead at 12:08. The Cobbers would counter with their back-to-back goals but unfortunately St. Thomas was able to sandwich a score of their own inbetween the two tallies.
Mandi Samuelson started the flurry of three goals in less than 1:30 when she scored on the power play at 14:44 on an assist from Brit Vander Kooy. The Tommies then answered with a goal just :30 seconds later at 15:14. That goal would prove to be the eventual game-winner as Bre Bian would score for CC at 15:52 to bring the score to 3-2. Alyssa Dahl and Jen Bextermueller assisted on the play.
The game would continue to be a one-goal affair until the final minute of play. After Concordia head coach Ace Gregg pulled netminder Maddie Haroldson in favor of an extra attacker, UST closed the season on CC when Kristin Beese scored at 19:41 on the open net.
St. Thomas wound up with a 30-23 edge in shots on goal. Haroldson made 26 in the losing effort for Concordia. Tommie goal Lauren Bradel stopped 21 of the 23 shots she faced.
Both teams had one power play goal on the afternoon. CC went 1-for-3, while the Tommies scored one goal in their three attempts.
