Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/23/08)-- It was a tale of two halves in Concordia's game with No.3-ranked Gustavus on Saturday. The first 32 minutes of the Cobbers' game against the Gusties played out just the way CC wanted. Concordia was tied with the nationally-ranked Gusties 1-1 midway through the second period. Unfortunately GAC scored six goals in the final 30 minutes and won 7-1.
The game finishes off the regular season for Concordia and gets them ready to play in the conference playoffs. The Cobbers enter postseason play with a 10-11-2 overall record and a 10-6-2 mark in conference games. Gustavus completes the first perfect season in MIAC women's hockey history. The Gusties end conference play 18-0-0. They are now 23-2-0 overall and have won the last six games.
The game didn't start the way Concordia had planned. They conceded a goal to the explosive Gusties, just 1:40 into the first period. That score would stand until 7:06 into the second period when the Cobbers tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Amanda Matchett. Kelsey Puffe earned the assist on Matchett's fourth goal of the year.
The tie score lasted for just over 5:30. At 12:44, the Gusties scored the first of their three goals in the final half of the second period. That was followed by a goal at 14:04 and then Laura Hillman's tally at 17:53 gave GAC a commanding 4-1 lead heading into the final period.
Gustavus capped off the scoring in the game by scoring a trio of goals less than four minutes apart in the final 20 minutes.
Concordia was outshot 31-19 in the game. Both teams played two goalies in the game. Amber Malcolm started the game for CC and made 14 saves in the first 34:04 of play. Maddie Haroldson finished the game and stopped 10 shots. The Gusties started the game with Breanna Scavo. She went the first 50:20 and made 15 saves to earn her second win of the series and 20th of the season. Sarah Windhorst came on for the final 9:40 and made three saves.
One of the biggest subplots came on the power play where Gustavus went 1-for-4. It was the first power play goal conceded by Concordia past 12 games. CC had not allowed a power play goal since before the Christmas break and held opponents scoreless on 37 power play attempts before Gustavus scored on their only man-advantage situation in the third period.
Concordia will now turn its attention to the postseason. The Cobbers will play at St. Thomas on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 3 p.m. in the semifinals of the conference tournament. CC is making their first playoff appearance since the 2002-03 season when they lost 3-2 in the MIAC semifinals.
