Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/16/08)-- Concordia got a pair of goals from junior Kelsey Puffe and edged St. Ben's 4-3 on Saturday in Moorhead to complete the two-game sweep over the Blazers. It is the second straight series sweep for the Cobbers and fourth of the season - the most since they last made the playoffs in 2002-03 when they had five.

The game featured a combined seven goals which is a veritable offensive shootout for the defensive-orientated Cobbers. It is the most goals by both teams in a conference game for Concordia in the past nine games. It also ties the season high-water mark for most goals in a MIAC game by both teams in a CC game.

Concordia took a 1-0 lead after one period when Puffe scored the first of her two goals in the game at the 8:32 mark. It was only Puffe's second goal of the season. Despite the one-goal lead after the opening 20 minutes, the game was an even affair as both teams skated up and down the ice looking for an odd-man rush.

St. Ben's then took the lead at the start of the second period when they scored two goals less than two minutes apart. Ashley Davenport scored her second goal of the year at 4:42 and then Ashley Rebeck recorded her fourth goal of the season at 6:03. CSB would enjoy the lead for only 3:31 before Cobber freshman Kristyn Voegele scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game at 2-2. Assists were credited to Britt Vander Kooy and Lisa Graham. On the play, Voegele was able to jam home the rebound after being knocked to the ice by a Blazer defender.

The game-deciding stretch happened in a two-minute span at the end of the second period and the start of the third period. With the game tied at 2-2 Puffe put the Cobbers ahead to stay when she scored at 19:10 of the middle frame. Kayla Thorson the scored the eventual game-winner at 1:09 of the third period. For Thorson it was her fifth goal of the season. Ceara Bergsrud and Mandi Samuelson picked up assists on Puffe's goal, while Kendal Black and Abby Callahan earned assists on Thorson's score.

St. Ben's cut the margin to 4-3 with a goal by Maggie Kinney at 7:03 but that would be as close as they would come for the remainder of the game. Concordia was able to kill off one penalty in the final 10 minutes of play and held the Blazers to only six shots during that stretch. The Cobbers were aided by a pair of power plays in the final seven minutes of the period.

Amber Malcolm, making a rare start in goal for Concordia, made a couple of key saves in the final minutes of the game and earned her first win of the season. She stopped 23 shots in the game and turned aside 16 of the final 17 shots she faced. St. Ben's netminder Amanda Plumm made 26 saves in the game as Concordia outshot the Blazers 30-26.

Neither team could score on the power play. The Cobbers went 0-for-2 in the game and held St. Ben's scoreless in their three man-advantage situations. It is the 10th straight game that Concordia has not allowed a power play goal. CC has not given up a goal on the power play in the 2008 calendar year and has held opponents scoreless in 30 straight power play chances.

Concordia will finish off the 2007-08 regular season when they host league-leading Gustavus on Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center. The Gusties are 16-0 in MIAC play and are currently ranked third in the latest USCHO DIII poll. Gustavus has lost only one league game in the past three seasons.
