Gameday Game Recap:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/2/08)-- For the second straight game against St. Thomas, Concordia gave up a pair of first-period goals and lost. On Saturday, the Cobbers conceded two goals in the first 6:17 of play, but then held the Tommies scoreless until an empty-net tally at the very end and lost by two. Kristina Westmark scored the lone goal for CC as she knocked home her first goal of the season midway through the third period.
The loss knocks Concordia out of a chance to tie St. Thomas for second place in the conference standings. The Cobbers are now firmly in third place in the MIAC with a 6-4-2 league record. CC has 14 conference points, five points clear of St. Olaf and St. Ben's heading into Saturday night's action. Concordia is now 6-9-2 overall. The sweep puts a stranglehold on second place for the Tommies. UST is now 9-3-0 in the MIAC and 15-4-0 overall.
The game was decided in the first seven minutes of play when St. Thomas scored both of their non empty-net goals in the game. Kara Ledel netted the first goal of the game at the 2:00 mark and then Ashley Reinhardt added the eventual game-winner at 6:17. For Reinhardt it was her second goal of the series and ninth of the season.
Concordia was never able to get a sustained offensive threat on the St. Thomas net in the first two periods of play. Through the first 40 minutes of the game, UST held a 31-14 edge in shots on goal.
The difference for the Cobber offense came in the third period when they put up 11 shots on goal, scored their only goal of the game and had several quality chances to tie the game in the final nine minutes of play.
Westmark busted up the shutout attempt for St. Thomas when she scored her first collegiate goal at 10:03. Alyssa Dahl and Ceara Bergsrud were given the assists. For Dahl it was her team-leading 11th point of the year.
From there, the Cobbers pushed forward but were never able to get the game-tying goal. St. Thomas added the insurance goal at 18:44 when Jill Kobow scored on an empty net.
The Tommies held a 36-25 advantage in shots on goal for the game. CC netminder Julie York made 33 saves and allowed only the two goals. Laurel Bradel stopped 24 shots and picked up her 11th win of the season.
Concordia will finish off their three-series road trip next weekend when they play at Augsburg on Friday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 9. Both games will be played at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
