Gameday Game Recap:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/1/08)-- Concordia had a grip around second place in the MIAC for 38:39 in their game against St. Thomas in St. Paul on Friday. Unfortunately their grasp was unlocked in a span of 1:21 when the Tommies scored a pair of goals and hung on to win 2-1. The two teams entered the game deadlocked in the conference standings with 14 points. With the loss, CC is now 6-3-2 in the MIAC and stuck on the 14-point plateau. UST jumps to 8-3-0 in conference and moves two points clear of the Cobbers. Concordia has their two-game winning streak come to an end and slides to 6-8-2 overall. The Tommies put an end to their two-game losing streak and move to 14-4-0.

The decisive 1:21 came at the back end of the first period with Concordia holding a 1-0 lead. St. Thomas tied the game at 17:24 and then got the eventual game-winner at the 18:45 mark. That would put an end to the scoring as the Cobbers would put up 22 shots on goal in the final two periods but were never able to come up the game-tying goal.

Concordia sophomore Amanda Matchett staked Concordia to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when she stole the puck and then raced in on a breakaway to score at 12:10. For Matchett it was her third goal of the season.

The Cobbers would produce their best offensive attack in  the third period but were never able to get the puck past freshman goalie Kristen Elliot. Elliot turned aside nine shots in the final frame, including several point blank prospects and one breakaway from Alyssa Dahl.

For the game, St. Thomas outshot Concordia 39-32. Cobber goalie Maddie Haroldson made 37 saves on the night. Elliot stopped 31 of the 32 shots she faced and earned her fourth straight win.

The two teams went scoreless on the power play. CC was 0-for-2 and UST was 0-for-3.

Concordia and St. Thomas will finish off their key conference series on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.
