Gameday Game Recap:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/26/08)-- Concordia went to Blaine on Friday looking to find some scoring power and hoping to stay in the top half of the MIAC standings. After Saturday's 3-1 win over Bethel, the Cobbers have posted back-to-back multiple goal games and are securely locked into third place in the conference standings. The two-game sweep is the second of the league season for Concordia, the most season sweeps since the 2003-04 season when they had three MIAC series sweeps.
The second straight win pushes the Cobbers' league record to 6-2-2. CC is currently tied for second in the conference standings with St. Thomas. Overall, Concordia is now 6-7-2 on the year. Bethel watches as their losing streak reaches four games. The Royals are now 6-9-1 overall and 3-7-0 in the MIAC.
Concordia scored a single goal in each period to pick up the sweep. They scored a pair of power play goals and added an empty net tally at the end of the game. Junior Alyssa Dahl scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the second period, to help CC to the win. Dahl broke out of a season-long scoring slump over the weekend. After not scoring a goal in her first eight games of the year, Dahl had three goals over the weekend. Her scores helped jump her jump into a tie for the team lead in points (10).
The Cobbers' season-long story of solid goaltending continued. Freshman Julie York matched sophomore Maddie Haroldson who gave up only one goal on Friday night. York allowed a single goal in the second period and made 26 saves in the game. She lowered her team-leading goals against average to 1.59 on the year.
Britt Vander Kooy netted the first goal of the game at 7:13 of the opening frame. The power play goal was her first of the season and was set up by Jen Bextermueller.
Bethel tied the game at 1-1 with just over six minutes remaining in the second period. Dahl then poked home the game-winner with 32 seconds remaining in the second period. Bextermueller picked up her second assist on the power play goal.
The teams skated through a scoreless third period until Dahl added the empty-net goal at 19:46.
For the game, Concordia outshot Bethel 30-27. BU goalie Beth Spurrier made 27 saves in the losing effort.
The Cobbers will have another key MIAC road series next weekend when they play at St. Thomas on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. Both games will be played at the St. Thomas Ice Center in Mendota Heights, Minn.
