Gameday Game Recap:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/25/08)-- Concordia broke out of its recent offensive slump and beat Bethel 3-1 in Blaine on Friday. The Cobbers, who had not scored more than two goals in a game in their last four games, improve to 5-2-2 in conference play and retain sole possession of third place in the MIAC standings. CC is now 5-7-2 overall. The Royals, who entered the game just four points behind the Cobbers, lose for the third straight time and fall to 6-8-1 overall and 3-6 in the MIAC.
The Cobbers did all of their scoring in the first two periods of play. They poached a single goal in the first period and then added two more in the second. All the while, CC goalie Maddie Haroldson shut the door on the Royals. In the end she allowed a single goal in the third period. By that time it was too late and Concordia was able to roll to the two-goal win.
Kayla Thorson opened the scoring in the first period when she scored an unassisted, short-handed goal at 16:01. For Thorson it was her fourth goal of the year and she becomes the first Cobber player to reach 10 points on the year.
Concordia then produced a pair of even-strength goals in the middle period. Alyssa Dahl finally found the back of the net. Her goal, the eventual game winner, at 6:50 gave the Cobbers a two-goal cushion. Mandi Samuelson and Jen Bextermueller were given the assists on the play. For Samuelson it marked the third straight game she has had at least one point. Abby Callahan then capped the CC scoring attack. She scored her fourth goal in the past six games at 17:35 to put Concordia up 3-0. Kacey Franklin put up the assist on the goal.
Through two periods, Concordia outshot Bethel 31-19.
The only goal of the final frame came at the midway point. Bethel's Bethany Murphy scored her seventh goal of the year at 10:40 to end Haroldson's shutout bid.
In the end CC outshot BU 37-27 and Haroldson was credited with 26 saves. She is now 3-3-1 on the season. Bethel goalie Beth Spurrier stopped 34 shots and lost for the eighth time in the year.
Neither team could score on the power play. Concordia was 0-for-4 in man-advantage situations and the Royals went 0-for-3 on the power play.
The two teams will complete their series on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the
National Sports Center/Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.
