Gameday Game Recap:
WINONA, Minn. (12/08/07)-- It was fun while it lasted. Like all parties, holidays or vacations all good times eventually have to come to an end. That is what happened on Saturday as the Cobbers allowed a single goal in each period and fell 3-0 to St. Mary's in Winona. The loss snaps Concordia's MIAC unbeaten streak and ends their five-game unbeaten string. Concordia is now 4-1-1 in conference play and holding down at least third place in the league standings as the teams head into 2008. CC is now 4-6-1 overall and misses a chance to reach the .500 mark for the first time in the 2007-08 campaign. The Cardinals win for the first time in six games and for the second time in conference play. SMU ups their overall mark to 2-6-0 and their MIAC mark to 2-4-0.
Despite being on the wrong end of the 3-0 decision, Concordia actually outshot St. Mary's 36-24. For the Cobbers it was the third most shots on goal for the season and the fourth time in the past six games they have had at least 29 shots in a game.
The game-winning goal came at the 4:46 mark of the opening period. Madison Sienko scored the first of her two goals in the game, on the power play to start the Cardinals' trifecta of goals in the game. SMU would go on to score a power play goal, and even-strength goal and a short-handed goal in the three periods.
St. Mary's added to their lead in the second period with their even-strength goal. Sienko scored her second goal at 14:34.
The third period highlighted the Cobbers' woes in the game. CC outshot SMU 16-5 in the frame but the Cardinals came away with the only goal of the period. St. Mary's finished off the scoring with a short-handed goal midway through the period. Jenn Shire scored her first goal of the season at 10:14.
In the final 9:46 of the game, Concordia took 11 shots but none was able to beat SMU goalie Brittany Lemke who made 36 saves in the game to earn her first collegiate shutout.
Cobber goalie Julie York stopped 21 shots in the game.
Both teams were awarded six power plays for the game. Concordia went 0-for-6, while the Cardinals were 1-for-6 on the man-advantage situations.
Concordia will now have a 27-day break for the Christmas holiday break. The Cobbers will return to action on Jan. 4 when they host Lindenwood in an exhibition game at 7 p.m.
