Gameday Game Recap:
WINONA, Minn. (12/07/07)-- Concordia scored four straight goals in the second and third periods to overcome a 1-0 deficit and beat St. Mary's 4-3 in Winona on Friday. The win keeps the Cobbers unbeaten in MIAC play this season. CC is now 4-0-1 in the conference and one of only two teams that have not lost a league contest. Concordia also ups its overall record to 4-5-1. CC has now won four of its last five games and is only one game under the .500 mark after starting the campaign at 0-5-0. St. Mary's has now lost five straight and is 1-6-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the MIAC.
The Cobbers showed their bus legs in the first period - allowing St. Mary's to take a 1-0 lead at the back end of the period and posting a 14-5 edge in shots on goal.
The tide turned for Concordia as soon as they left the locker room after the first intermission. Refreshed after a 20-minute warm-up, the Cobbers scored three goals in the next 20 minutes and outshot SMU 16-7. Freshman Kacey Franklin opened the scoring whne she netted her fourth goal of the season at the 3:17 mark. Bre Bian would then follow with the first of her two goals when she scored at 16:48. Perhaps the biggest goal of the game came just :35 seconds before the end of the second frame when Abby Callahan scored her second goal of the year. The late-period goal gave Concordia a two-goal advantage heading into the third period and allowed CC to put a bit of distance between themselves and the upset-minded Cardinals.
The third period started perfectly for the Cobbers as they scored an early goal to push the lead to 4-1. Bian scored her second goal of the game, and fifth of the year, at the :49-second mark to put CC in the driver's seat.
A pair of late goals by St. Mary's brought the final score to 4-3 but SMU was never able to come up with the game-tying goal in the waning moments of regulation.
Sophomore goalie Maddie Haroldson made 33 saves in the game to pick up her second win of the season. She has now won her last two starts. SMU netminder Brittany Lemke turned aside 21 shots in the losing effort.
Concordia was outshot 36-25 in the game, including 29-9 in the first and third periods. Both teams managed to score one power play goal. CC was 1-for-3 on the power play, while St. Mary's went 1-for-5.
The two teams will finish the two-game series on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2:05 p.m. in Winona.
