Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/169/07)-- Concordia scored three unanswered goals in the second and third periods and went on to beat St. Kate's 4-1 on Friday in Moorhead to claim their first win of the season. The win snaps the Cobbers' five-game losing streak to start the season. CC  is now 1-5-0 for the year. The Wildcats remain winless on the year and fall to 0-2-1.

The storyline for the game came on the power play. The contest featured a combined 16 power plays. Concordia was able to score twice in their six attempts, while the Wildcats were held to only one goal in their 10 power play chances.

The game, which was the MIAC opener for both teams, started with plenty of offensive action but few goals. The two teams combined for 26 shots in the opening period, but only Concordia could come away with a goal. The lone goal of the opening 20 minutes came at 13:39 when Mandi Samuelson tipped in a shot from Brit Vander Kooy on the power play.

Perhaps the biggest play of the first period came in the middle of the frame when CC goalie Maddie Haroldson stopped a Wildcat breakaway while the Cobbers were on the power play. Haroldson would repeat that feat a few more times throughout the game as she stoned several CSC breakaway attempts.

St. Kate's tied the game less than seven minutes into the second period when Aryn Ball scored her first goal of the season at 6:46 on the power play.

It would take Concordia less than 15 seconds to regain the lead. Sophomore Kayla Thorson was able to bang home a rebound after a shot from the point from Ceara Bergsrud. The goal at 6:58 gave CC a 2-1 lead and stopped the momentum that the Wildcats had gained from scoring the game-tying goal just 12 seconds before.

The teams then played even until the final 10 minutes of the third period when Concordia sealed the game by scoring a power play goal at 13:52 and then an even-strength nugget at 14:18. The first goal came from Bre Bian while the Cobbers were on the man-advantage situation. The next goal, just 26 seconds after was credited to freshman Jen Bextermueller. It was Bextermueller's team-leading third goal of the season.

Concordia outshot St. Kate's 37-30 for the game. The contest also featured 19 penalties for 38 penalty minutes between the two teams. Concordia was whistled for 12 penalties and the Wildcats went to the box on seven occasion.

CC goalie Maddie Haroldson continues the trend of solid goaltending she started in her freshman season last year. She stopped 29 of the 30 shots she faced and picked up her first win of the season. She also dropped her goals against average to 2.70 for the year and upped her save percentage to 92.7%. Wildcat goalie Mel Gerten made 33 saves and was saddled with her second loss of the year.

The two teams will finish off the two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
