MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/09/07)-- Concordia conceded three straight goals in the second and third period and lost to No.8-ranked UW-Superior 4-2 in the home opener for the Cobbers on Friday. Despite playing the nationally-ranked Yellowjackets tough for the entire game, CC is handed their fourth straight loss to start the 2007-08 season. Concordia is now 0-4-0, while Superior remains unbeaten and ups their record to 3-0-0.
Concordia broke on top first. The Cobbers scored the only goal of the first period despite being outshot 14-5. Amanda Matchett notched her second goal of the season to put CC up 1-0 at the 8:24 mark of the opening period.
The 1-0 lead lasted until the final six minutes of the second period. Superior scored the game-tying goal at 14:11 of the middle frame. They added a second a little over three minutes later. Both goals came while the teams were playing at full strength.
The Yellowjackets finished off their trio of goals by getting the eventual game-winner midway through the final period. Stacy Anderson scored the second of her two goals in the game at the 10:15 mark. The Cobbers responded quickly by trimming the lead to one at 3-2 when Kaylee Black scored her first goal of the year on the power play.
Superior finished off the scoring with an empty net goal just 18 seconds before the final horn sounded.
In the game, the Yellowjackets outshot Concordia 48-13. Cobber goalie Maddie Haroldson made 44 saves, while Superior netminder Melissa Kunzelman stopped 11 shots to earn her second win of the year.
The two teams will finish off their two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
