ADRIAN, Mich. (11/03/07)-- For the second straight night Concordia gave up five goals to host Adrian (Mich.). However, unlike Friday when they were shut out by the Bulldogs, on Saturday CC scored four goals and were almost able to come away with a tie. The loss is the second straight to start the season for Concordia, while Adrian improves to 5-1 on the year.
After allowing the first goal in the game at the 9:29 mark of the first period, the Cobbers countered with a pair of goals by freshman Jen Bextermueller before the first frame was over. Bextermueller's first goal came just 48 seconds after Adrian scored the opening goal of the game and was the first of two power play goals on the night for CC. Bextermueller's second goal was at 16:53 and was assisted by Kayla Thorson and Mandi Samuelson. It was Thorson's second assist of the game.
The team's then switched scoring roles in the second period with the Bulldogs outscoring Concordia 2-1. All three goals in the middle frame came on the power play. The Cobbers' third goal of the game came from sophomore Amanda Matchett. Matchett had one goal in all of last season.
Adrian then took control of the game in the final period by breaking open the 3-3 tie with a goal at the beginning of the stanza and then one at the end. The first score came at 2:23 and was the Bulldog's third power play goal of the game. The final goal was at 19:13 after Concordia had pulled goalie Maddie Haroldson.
The Cobbers then got back to within 5-4 with six seconds left to go in the game when Samuelson scored her first goal of the season. Lisa Graham and Bre Bian were credited with the assists.
For the game, Adrian outshot Concordia 33-19. The difference came on the power play where the Cobbers went 2-for-5 but conceded three goals to the Bulldogs who went 3-for-9 in their man-advantage situations.
Haroldson made 28 saves in her first appearance of the season. Adrian goalie Ashley Kavanagh stopped 15 shots to earn her second win of the year.
Concordia will travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on Buffalo State on Sunday at 2 p.m.. The game is the third, and final, game of the team's three-game eastern road trip to start the season.
