ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (1/31/09)-- In basketball it's not good if you shoot 35.9% from the field and get outrebounded 38-20. That's exactly what happened on Saturday against Bethel as the Cobbers dropped a 79-66 decision in Arden Hills. The loss ends Concordia's six-game winning streak and also knocks them out of a tie for first place in the MIAC.

Concordia (13-5/12-3 MIAC) led early but then came unglued midway through the first half and could never recover. The Cobbers took a 10-point lead in the first six minutes of play but then watched Bethel (9-9/8-7 MIAC) go on a 20-2 run over the next eight minutes to grab a 28-20 lead with under six minutes to play in the half. During that stretch CC went 1-for-11 from the floor and was outrebounded 12-3. The Royals then held on to take a seven-point into the break at 39-32.

In the second half Bethel pushed the lead to 10 points and then held onto an eight-to-nine point lead throughout most of the first half of the second period. The lead got be be as many as 12 points with 7:27 to play but then the Cobbers cut the margin to four points at 68-64 with 2:19. Just when it looked like Concordia might have enough magic to post a huge comeback win, the Royals scored the next nine points and took a 13-point lead that put the game out of reach.

Besides only shooting 35.9% (23-for-64) from the floor and being outrebounded by 18, Concordia also came up on the wrong end of a 32-14 margin in points in the paint. The inside domination by Bethel also helped the Royals shoot 32 free throws as opposed to only 15 for the Cobbers. CC shot a respectable 47.6% (10-for-21) from 3-point range. Bethel made the most of their interior advantage by shooting 51.1% (24-for-47) from the field. The Royals shot 81.3% (26-for-32) from the foul line.

Concordia had three players factor in double figures in scoring. Jenna Freudenberg was held scoreless in the first half and finished with a team-high 15 points. Maggie Bauernfeind and Erica Nord added 14 points each. bauernfeidn was 4-for-8 from behind the arc and Nord went 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Sara Sorbo had a team-high five rebounds.

Bethel received a massive game from preseason All-American Annegret Nautsch. She had 17 points, 17 rebounds and added four blocks. Guards Autumn Beasley and Taylor Sheley each had a game-high 19 points.

The Cobbers will stay on the road when they play at Hamline on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
