Concordia freshman Jenna Green battles for a rebound in the Cobbers' 62-54 win at Macalester on Wednesday. The win was the fifth straight for CC and keeps them in a tie for second place in the MIAC.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/07/09)-- Concordia built a 15-point lead with 8:31 to play in the second half but then had to hold off Macalester down the stretch to post a 62-54 win over the Scots in St. Paul on Wednesday. The victory is the fifth straight for the Cobbers who are now 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the MIAC. CC is currently in a tie for second place in the league standings. Macalester, fresh off an upset win over Gustavus on Monday, drops to 6-4 in all games and 4-3 in league play.

For the second straight game the Cobbers were led in scoring by senior guar Jenna Freudenberg who finished with 19 points and missed on a free throw down the stretch that would have given her back-to-back 20 point games. She was 8-for-15 from the floor and also grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore Maggie Bauernfeind was the only other Concordia player with more than seven points in the game. She went 3-for-5 from 3-point range and added 17 points. She has now scored at least 15 points in four of the last five games. Lindsey Schultz had a team-high eight rebounds to go along with seven points.

Macalester was led by Trina PaStarr and Ann Baltzer. PaStarr had 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to collect her fifth double-double of the year. Baltzer had a team-high 13 points.

The Cobbers held Macalester to just 27.1% shooting from the floor. That is a season low for the Scots and represents the best defensive effort in opponent's shooting percentage this season for CC. It's the lowest field goal percentage by a Concordia opponent since last season when the Cobbers held St. Ben's to a 25.5% shooting percentage. The Scots were also ice cold from the outside, connecting on just 18.2% of their shots from outside the arc.

Concordia regained their touch from 3-point range. After struggling in the first two games of the New Year from outside the arc, the Cobbers knocked down 42.9% (6-for-14) of their shots from long range, CC shot 41.2% (21-for-51) from the floor. Concordia held a 39-34 advantage in rebounding and forced 28 Scot turnovers while coming away with 16 steals in the game. It is the second time in the last three games that CC has forced 16 steals.

Concordia will stay on the road for a pair of back-to-back games over the weekend. CC will square off against league-leading St. Ben's on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. and then travel to Winona to take on St. Mary's on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m.
