Game Recap

ST. PETER, Minn. (2/22/07)-- Concordia wasn't able to beat Gustavus for a seventh straight time as the Gusties used an 18-0 in the final six minutes of play to erase a five-point deficit and claim a 63-52 win in the semifinals of the MIAC Tournament on Thursday in St. Peter.

The Cobbers had beaten the Gusties twice already in the 2006-07 season and had won six straight against Gustavus dating back to the 2004-05 season. That streak came to a crashing end in the final seven minutes of play. After the Cobbers had taken a 47-41 lead with 6:05 remaining in the game, the Gusties went on an improbable 18-0 run that gave them the lead at 59-47 with 46 seconds to go.

The loss finishes Concordia's season with an 18-9 overall record. It also snaps the Cobbers three-game conference tournament winning streak. Gustavus advances to the tournament championship game where they will face St. Ben's in St. Joseph, Minn. on Saturday. The Gusties, who are now 22-4, reach the MIAC playoff championship for the second time in program history.

Melanie Hageman led all scorers with 24 points. She also had 10 rebounds to record her sixth double-double of the season. Senior Annie Keeley was the only other Cobber player in double figures. She finished with 10 points. Fellow senior Leanne White had a career night on the boards. She had a career-high 14 rebounds and added six points.

Gustavus was led by Jess Vadnais who had 20 points and went 11-of-13 from the free throw line including going 8-for-8 in the final minute of play. Bri Monahan had 19 points and was the only other Gustavus player to score more than seven points.

Both teams posted similar shooting and rebounding numbers. Concordia shot 30.0% (18-of-60) from the field and 23.8% (5-of-21) from 3-point range. Gustavus shot 33.9% (19-of-56) from the floor and 20.0% (3-of-15) from behind the arc. With all the missed shots in the game, the teams combined to haul down 88 rebounds. The Cobbers held a slight 45-43 edge in rebounding.
