(2/20/07)-- Two teams were tied 30-30 at halftime in the first round of the MIAC playoffs on Tuesday in Moorhead. One was making its fifth straight conference playoff appearance and is the defending tournament champions. The other team was making its first-ever playoff appearance. For the final 20 minutes of the game, experience won out over enthusiasm as Concordia cruised to an 80-72 win over St. Kate's in the first round of the playoffs. The Cobbers' comeback was keyed by senior guard Annie Keeley who scored 23 of her game-high 28 points in the second half. The 28 points is a career-high for Keeley who bettered her previous best of 25 against St. Olaf in the 2004-05 season. The 28 points is also the most by a Cobber in a playoff game since Mandy Pearson scored 29 points against St. Ben's in the 2003-04 conference tournament. Concordia advances to the MIAC semifinals for the fourth straight season. CC will play at No.2-seed Gustavus on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. The Cobbers have now won three straight league playoffs games and are 5-2 in their past seven conference tournament games. The Cobbers up their 2006-07 record to 18-8. The Wildcats miss on their chance to capture their first-ever tournament victory. St. Kate's finishes their season with a 15-11 overall mark. The second-half turnaround for CC started from the onset of the final period. Concordia went on a 24-7 run to open the frame and was able to hold off the streak-shooting Wildcats. Leading 54-37 with 11:10 to play, the Cobbers stretched the lead to 18 points at 62-44 before St. Kate's went on a 16-6 run to get to within eight at 68-60 with 3:15 remaining. The Wildcats would get no closer as CC was able to trade baskets for the final three minutes of play. The second half was all Keeley's. She went 3-of-5 from 3-point range and 6-of-8 from the floor to go along with a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line in the final 20 minutes. When her team needed her most, the senior captain stepped up and scored 11 of the team's first 22 points in the second half. In the end, Concordia shot 50.9% (27-of-53) from the field and 40.0% (6-of-15) from 3-point range. It is the third straight game Concordia has shot better than 40.0% from 3-point range. St. Kate's was solid throughout the game. They shot 40.3% (25-of-62) from the floor and 44.4% (8-of-18) from 3-point range. Joining Keeley in double figures for the Cobbers was junior post player Melanie Hageman and sophomore guard Jenna Freudenberg. Hageman finished with 17 points and had six rebounds but played the final nine minutes of the game with four fouls. Freudenberg had 15 points and four assists and was able to cause havoc by beating the Wildcat perimeter defense off of the dribble. St. Kate's had four of their starting five players in double figures. Sarah Schneider led the Wildcats with 21 points and hauled in six rebounds. Rachel Berglund added 18 points, while Brooke Hakanson went 4-of-6 from behind the arc and had 17 points. Ashley Busch finished with 11 points and six assists. The fifth CSC starter, Erin Petrich, dished out a game-high seven assists. Concordia will play Gustavus on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. The Cobbers defeated the Gusties twice in the regular season and have a six-game winning streak against Gustavus dating back to the 2004-05 season. The two teams have met twice in the conference playoffs with the Cobbers claiming both contests. The game on Thursday will be a rematch of last year's semifinal game which Concordia won 63-55 in Moorhead. The semifinal game can be heard live via the Cobber athletics website and can also be heard on local radio on 1280-AM.
