Game Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/14/07)-- On a night where the Cobbers honored the 25th anniversary of the 1981-82 AIAW National Championship, Concordia used an offensive effort reminiscent of days gone by to beat Augsburg 85-48.

The win helps the Cobbers secure a home game in the first round of the playoffs. If CC wins on Saturday at St. Mary's, they will earn the No.3 seed in the conference playoffs and host St. Kate's on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. The victory also snaps the Cobbers' two-game losing slide. CC is now 16-8 overall and 14-7 in the MIAC.

Concordia was determined to dominate the game from the opening tip. The Cobbers ran out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back. They were able to push the lead to 21-11 midway through the period before finishing 19-8 run in the final seven minutes of the opening half to take a 44-24 lead into the break.

The second half was more of the same. Concordia never allowed the Auggies to get to within 20 points in the second half and finished the game with five freshmen on the floor.

Melanie Hageman led all scorers as she finished with 21 points for the Cobbers. It marks the 10th time this season she has scored at least 20 points in a game. Hageman went 9-of-10 from the field and finished with seven rebounds.

Concordia also honored the three seniors on the team before the game and the two active seniors turned in solid performances. Leanne White recorded a game-high 11 rebounds and Annie Keeley finished with 15 points.

The Cobbers had 10 players score at least two points and 11 players haul down at least one rebound. A pair of freshmen guards also had outstanding games. Kaitlynn Gottenborg came off the bench to post a career-high 13 point and the energetic Sara Sorbo had nine rebounds. Gottenborg went 4-of-5 from the field and a perfect      3-of-3 from 3-point range.

Augsburg (1-23/1-20 MIAC) had two players finish in double figures in points. Michelle Richter had a team-high 13 points and Katie LaGrave had 12 points.

The biggest statistical difference in the game came in the rebound totals. Concordia dominated the boards and finished the game by outrebounding the Auggies 50-20. The inside domination carried over to points scored in the paint area. CC held a 40-20 margin in points scored from around the basket.

Concordia shot 52.4% (33-of-63) from the floor and 50.0% (6-of-12) from 3-point range for the entire game. Augsburg went 21-of-55 (38.2%) from the field and 2-of-6 (33.3%) from outside the arc. The Auggies also struggled from the free throw line where they shot a mere 25.0% (4-of-16) for the game.

The Cobbers will finish off the regular season by playing at St. Mary's on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m.
