Game Recap

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/10/07)-- Two reoccurring themes once again surfaced for the Cobbers in their 55-45 loss at St. Thomas on Saturday. The first is the season-long habit Concordia has fallen into when after losing one game, the Cobbers drop a second straight immediately following the first loss. The second them is one of continued traditional excellence as, even though they were beat by the Tommies, Concordia clinched its fifth straight MIAC playoff berth.

The loss drops the Cobbers overall mark to 15-8 on the year with all eight losses coming in pairs. The good news for the Cobbers is that each time they have lost back-to-back games, they have rattled off multiple-game winning streaks.  The even better news is that with Hamline's loss to Gustavus on Saturday, CC will once again be playing in the conference postseason that starts on Feb. 20. However, the loss also drops Concordia into a third-place tie with Carleton who beat St. Olaf on Saturday.

The 45 points scored by the Cobbers is a season low and comes only two games after CC posted their previous season low of 49 points. Concordia was never able to get in sync on offense as they scored only three points in the first seven minutes of play and finished the first half with a mere 17 points.

It didn't get much better in the second half as the Cobbers hit only seven of their 21 shot attempts in the final period and came away with a slightly-improved 28 points. For the game, Concordia shot 31.8% (14-of-44) from the floor and 27.3% (3-of-11) from 3-point range. If the shooting stats didn't spell the doom of CC, the turnovers, rebounds and bench scoring surely did. Concordia committed 19 miscues were outrebounded 39-30 and were outscored 20-11 by the Tommie reserve players.

The non-Cobber starters only contributed 11 points in the game with freshman Anna Matetich posting 10 of those 11 points.

Sophomore guard Jenna Freudenberg led Concordia in scoring with a game-high 15 points. She scored all 15 points in the second half alone giving her over half (53.6%) of the team's total point production in the final 20 minutes. She also went 3-of-3 from behind the arc to account the Cobbers' entire 3-point field goal total.

Melanie Hageman was the only other Concordia player besides Freudenberg and Matatich to score more than four points. She finished with 13 points. Senior Leanne White grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

St. Thomas did just enough to come away with the victory. The Tommies shot 36.8% (21-of-57) from the floor. However, UST was able to find the range from behind the arc, knocking down 54.5% (6-of-11) of their attempts from behind the arc. St. Thomas had only two players score in double figures but had five players score at least six points. Dee Prioleau came away with a    team-high 12 points.

The Cobbers will look to start their winning streak when they host Augsburg in the regular-season home finale on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 7:45 p.m.
