Game Recap MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/07/07)-- Concordia senior guard Annie Keeley set the 3-point field goal record on Wednesday night against Bethel but in the end she would have traded that record for a successful two-point basket as time ran out in regulation. Keeley's difficult up-and-under layup attempt in the dying seconds of the second half came up just short and the Cobbers fell to the Royals 67-66. Keeley became the school's all-time 3-point field goal leader when she sank her only long-range basket of the night with 2:30 remaining in the second half. The basket gave her 165 career 3-point field goals which broke the old record of 164 set by Brandi Myers ('01). Unfortunately Keeley's milestone came on a night when the Cobbers missed a chance to clinch their fifth straight MIAC playoff berth. The loss knocks CC's conference record to 13-6 and delays the process of qualifying for the conference tournament for at least one more game. The only other good news for the Cobbers came from the fact that MIAC foe Carleton also lost on the night which keeps Concordia in sole possession of third place. The Royals, who were fighting for their playoff life, won for the second straight game and showed a level of play that is uncharacteristic of a team that has 11 conference losses on the year. With the win, BU moves to 8-11 in league play and 9-13 overall. The game went back-and-forth the entire 40 minutes with neither team being able to grab a lead of more than six points. The two teams battled through 15 ties in the game which was tied 30-30 at halftime. In the second half, Concordia was able to grab a pair of five-point leads at 44-39 and then again at 55-50 but each time the Royals quickly erased the margin within two minutes of play. In the end, the Cobbers took a 66-65 lead with 1:33 to play on a pair of Keeley free throws. The game stayed that way until the final 15 seconds of play when Bethel missed a field goal attempt and sophomore Annegret Nautsch grabbed the offensive rebound. She was then fouled and sank both free throws to give BU the 67-66 lead. Concordia then worked the ball into the frontcourt with :06 seconds left on the clock and called a pair of timeouts to set up their final play. The ball eventually found its way down to Keeley who was on the right baseline. She then tried to drive and lay the ball in but her game-winning basket attempt fell harshly off the iron and into the arms of one of the Bethel defenders. Nautsch was the inside force for the Royals as she came away with a game-high 19 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. She was one of four Bethel players in double figures. Keeley and Melanie Hageman led the scoring chart for the Cobbers. Each player finished with 17 points on the game. Jenna Freudenberg chipped in 10 points. Both teams shot in the 40-percent range from the floor and around 27-percent from 3-point range for the night. The big difference came around the basket where the Royals outrebounded the Cobbers 30-19 and held a 20-8 margin in points in the paint area in the second half. Concordia will try to secure its fifth straight league playoff berth when they play at St. Thomas on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. The game can be heard live via the Cobber athletics website. |
