Opponent's Home Page: Gustavus Basketball Game Rewind Game Stats: Final Stats vs. Gustavus - Now online! Game Recap ST. PETER, Minn. (2/05/07)-- It wasn't the prettiest game of the year, but as far as playoff implications and conference seedings go, Concordia's 49-46 win over Gustavus in St. Peter on Monday was pure Picasso. The 49 points scored by the Cobbers was a season-low but the CC defense limited the Gustie offense to a mere 26.8% (15-of-56) from the field and 23.5% (4-of-17) from 3-point range. The win gives the Cobbers the series sweep over Gustavus - who have only lost three games all season. The win is the fifth straight for the Cobbers as they move one step closer to securing their fifth straight MIAC playoff appearance. Concordia is now 13-5 in league play and 15-6 overall. The win also gives CC sole possession of third place in the league standings after Carleton was upset by Hamline on Monday. The loss snaps the Gusties' 10-game winning streak and knocks them out of a first-place tie with St. Ben's. Gustavus is now 15-3 in the MIAC and 18-3 overall. The other major news story from the game came early in the first half as Annie Keeley connected on her second 3-point field goal attempt of the game tying her with Brandi Myers ('01) for the school record for most 3-point field goals made in a career. Keeley was held without a long-range basket for the rest of the game and will now have a chance to break the record at home when the Cobbers host Bethel on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 7:45 p.m. The game was a low-scoring affair throughout the entire contest. The teams put up 49 points in the first half with Concordia taking a 26-23 lead into the break and then only 46 points in the second half (23-23). For the game, Concordia shot slightly better than the Gusties' frigid attack. CC shot 33.3% (18-of-54) from the field and also 33.3% (5-of-15) from 3-point range. The biggest advantage for the Cobbers came around the basket where they held a 48-40 edge in rebounding and a 24-18 margin in points scored in the paint area. Concordia junior Melanie Hageman led all scorers as she put up 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds to record her fifth double-double of the season. Senior forward Leanne White had a monster night under the basket, hauling down a season-high 11 rebounds to go along with seven points. Keeley finished with eight points and played most of the second half of the final period with four fouls. Gustavus was led by their usual suspects. Jess Vadnais and Bri Monahan were the only two Gustie players in double figures. Vadnais had 14 points and was 8-of-8 from the free throw line and Monahan added 13 points as well as a game-high 12 rebounds. Keeley will go searching for the 3-point record when the Cobbers take on Bethel on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 7:45 p.m. at Memorial Auditorium. The game can be seen and heard live via the Cobber athletics website and will also feature live statistics. |
