Game Recap MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/27/07)-- It seems that every time Concordia and St. Kate's tangle on the hardwood, the game turns into a high-scoring, back-and-forth thriller that is usually decided in the final minutes of play. Saturday's game was no exception as the Cobbers needed an Annie Keeley 3-point basket in the final seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime before they finally edged the Wildcats 90-88. Concordia had to erase an eight-point halftime margin and trailed nearly the entire game before Keeley's heroics in regulation, and then in the extra period, gave the Cobbers the season sweep over St. Kate's. The win is also the second straight for CC and moves them ahead of the Wildcats in the conference standings all alone in fourth place. Concordia is now 12-6 overall and 10-5 in league play. CSC, who is trying to make the conference playoffs for the first time in program history, falls into fifth place with a 9-6 MIAC mark and a 12-6 overall record. Keeley calmly sank her second 3-point basket of the game with :03 seconds left on the clock in regulation to tie the game at 78-78. The basket came after St. Kate's had sank two free throws to go ahead by three. Keeley was then allowed to dribble into the frontcourt and stop just outside the top of the key as the defense surprisingly sagged off to protect the lane. Keeley took advantage of the loose defense and nailed the game-tying shot from behind the arc. In overtime, Keeley hit a jumper with :15 seconds remaining to break an 88-88 deadlock. That basket would prove to be the game-winner as St. Kate's was forced into a turnover in their final possession of play. Keeley led Concordia with 22 points. She connected on a pair of long range shots and now needs only 10 more 3-point baskets to become the school's all-time 3-point field goal leader. All five Cobber starters finished the game in double-digits in scoring. Melanie Hageman finished with 17 points, sophomore guard Jenna Freudenberg added 16 and Leanne White and Sara Sorbo each chipped in 10 points. For White, it was a season-high in points and the most since she knocked down 11 points against Hamline on Jan. 19, 2005. Sorbo had another high intensity game for the Cobbers. To go along with her 10 points, she had a game-high nine rebounds and five steals before fouling out in the second minute in overtime. Rachel Berglund led the Wildcats all game long. She finished with a game-high 28 points and was 4-of-8 from 3-point range. Erin Petrich was spot on from the floor for most of the game. She started the game by going 7-of-7 from the field in the first half and finished the game with 18 points. Petrich was part of the Wildcat offense that shot 71.0% (22-of-31) from the field in the first half and ended the game with a 59.0 (36-of-61) field goal percentage. CSC also shot 46.2% (6-of-13) from 3-point range. Concordia shot 47.8% (33-of-69) from the floor for the game and connected on 33.3% (6-of-18) shot from 3-point range. The biggest statistical difference in the game came in turnovers. Concordia turned the ball over 14 times in the 45 minutes, while the Wildcats committed 21 miscues. Concordia will have their first break of January before returning to the court to host Macalester on Jan. 31 at 7:45 p.m. The game can be seen and heard live on the Cobber athletics website and will also feature live stats. |
