Game Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/24/07)-- In the end, the only drama that was left to be settled was whether or not Concordia junior Melanie Hageman would score her 1,000th career point against St. Olaf or have to wait until Saturday. Hageman answered that question with a layup with 4:49 remaining in the second half as the Cobbers went on to beat the Oles 83-62 in Moorhead on Wednesday.

Hageman becomes the 21st player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau for a career. She duplicates the feat of teammate Annie Keeley who reached the 1,000-point mark earlier in the year against St. Kate's. Hageman finished with a game-high 24 points, helping CC end their two-game conference losing skid.

Concordia (11-6/9-5 MIAC) needed a 47-point second half to finally break free of the hot-shooting Oles who continued to keep the game close in the first half despite committing 14 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play.

St. Olaf  (3-14/3-11 MIAC) shot 59.1% (13-of-22) from the field and 62.5% (5-of-8) from 3-point range in the opening period and trailed 36-32 at the break.

For the game, St. Olaf connected on 51.1% (23-of-45) of their shots from the floor and 60.0% (9-of-15) of their attempts from behind the arc. Their shooting prowess was done in by their propensity o turn the ball over and inability to stop the Cobbers from scoring in the paint.

The Oles finished the game with 26 miscues and CC scored 38 points in the paint.

Concordia needed a 36-16 run over a span of 13 minutes in the second half to finally shake free fro St. Olaf who entered the game fresh off of a defeat of St. Thomas.

Keeley led the second-half charge for the Cobbers. She scored 18 of her 22 points in the final minutes and also went 3-of-3 from 3-point range in the CC game-changing run. Keeley finished the game by connecting on three of her four attempts from behind the arc and now has 153 3-point baskets for her career. She needs only 12 more to become the program's all-time leader in 3-point field goals.

Hageman and Keeley were the only two players to score more than eight points in the game for Concordia. However, Cobber coach Jessica Rahman used 13 players in the game - nine of which scored at least two points.

The biggest impact player off the Cobber bench was the play from freshman guard Anna Matetich who scored eight points and had a game-high seven rebounds. Matetich has averaged 9.8 points and 5.5 rebounds in the team's last two games.

St. Olaf was led by the outside shooting touch of Kelsey Oja. Oja went 3-of-5 from behind the arc and came away with a team-high 15 points. She was one of three Ole players in double figures. Christina Sampson, St. Olaf's hero in their win over St. Thomas, also went 3-of-5 from 3-point range and added 13 points and Kristina Stoermer finished with 12 points.

Concordia will return to action when on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. when they host St. Kate's in a pivotal conference game as far as positioning for the playoffs is concerned. The Cobbers and Wildcats are currently tied for fourth place in the league standings with eight MIAC games remaining. The top six teams in the conference make the playoffs with the top four teams being assured of at least one home game in the conference tournament. The game on Saturday can be seen and heard live via the Cobber athletics website and will also feature live statistics.
