(1/22/07)-- Just before the Christmas break, Concordia scored a pair of points in the dying seconds and came away with a one-point victory over Carleton. On Monday in Northfield, the Knights returned the favor by recording a layup with :02 remaining to edge the Cobbers 58-57. The loss is the second straight for the Cobbers against the top three teams in the MIAC and drops their MIAC record to 8-5 in the MIAC and 10-6 overall. CC is now four games behind league-leading St. Ben's and is tied for fourth place with St. Kate's. The Knights jump to 9-3 in league play and 12-3 overall and remain in third place - two games behind the Blazers and one behind second-place Gustavus. Concordia shot 36.1% (22-of-61) from the floor and had their unbeaten string snapped whenever they shoot better than 35.0% from the field. The Cobbers were 10-0 on the year when they reached that shooting plateau for a game. CC also connected on 30.8% (4-of-13) of their shots from 3-point range in the game. Annie Keeley and Melanie Hageman had team-high point totals for Concordia as the pair had 12 points each. Hageman also ripped down a game-high 13 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the year. The 13 rebounds ties her season-high rebound total. Hageman also moved a step closer to the 1,000-point barrier. With her 12 points in the game, she now has 981 for her career. She needs only 19 more points to become the 21st player to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career. Earlier this season, teammate Annie Keeley achieved that milestone. Freshman Anna Matetich had her best night as a Cobber. She came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points, grab three rebounds, post three steals and finish with two assists. The Knights shot 41.9% (18-of-43) from the field and were had only two players score more than nine points but had all eight players that played in the game score at least one point. Amber Connor came away with a game-high 14 points and Sarah Lincoln added 12. Lincoln also came up with a team-high eight rebounds. The game came down to the 20 seconds of play when Carleton had the ball but trailed by one with 16 seconds left. After the Knights missed on two chances at the go-a-head basket Concordia secured the rebound and pushed the ball up the floor, racing away from the Knights and towards an apparent basket to go ahead by three points. Isler, though, sliced in and stole the ball away and quickly called timeout. Out of the timeout and with the ball under Concordia's basket, the Knights threw the ball to halfcourt and then quickly to Megan Mileusnic on the sideline. She raced up the side, cut hard to the basket and found enough room to lay the ball off the glass and in with two seconds left. Concordia called a timeout, but their subsequent inbounds pass was caught by Lincoln. The game was easily broken into three parts. The Knights dominated the first part, racing to a quick 24-9 lead as the Cobbers struggled to find the shooting touch and the Knights were clicking. The second part started at the five-minute mark of the first half, as Keeley's jumper ignited a 12-4 closing spurt for the visitors to leave Carleton ahead, 31-24, at the break. The Cobbers kept pushing, though, using a 16-2 run over six-minute span to lead, 48-41, midway through the half. The Cobbers' lead expanded to eight, but the Knights answered with a 13-2 string, with Isler and Connor both scoring five points during the stretch, to leave the Knights ahead, 56-53, with less than three minutes left. Hageman and Keeley willed consecutive shots into the hoop and with 90 seconds left the Cobbers led. Both teams had chances but came away empty, setting up Mileusnic's winning basket. Concordia will look to put a stop to their two-game losing slide when they host St. Olaf on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7:45 p.m. The game can be seen and heard live on the Cobber website and will also feature live statistics.
