Game Recap

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (1/10/07)-- Melanie Hageman scored a season-high 30 points and Annie Keeley broke out of her shooting slump to score 23 points and help Concordia pull away from Bethel in the final minutes of the second half to post an 87-77 victory in Arden Hills on Wednesday.

The biggest advantage for Concordia in the game came at the free throw line where the Cobbers went 25-of-26 and finished with by shooting 96.2%. That mark breaks the school record for highest free throw percentage in a single game. The past record was 21-of-22 (95.4%) set on Dec. 20, 1980 against NDSU.

The win is the second straight for the Cobbers who snapped a two-game conference losing streak on Monday. Concordia moves to 5-3 in the conference and is now in a four-way tie for fourth place in the MIAC. CC ups its overall mark to 7-4 on the season. Bethel drops to 2-7 in league play and 3-8 overall.

Concordia jumped to a 45-40 lead at the break and then upped the margin to 13 points at 61-48 with 13:13 left to play. Bethel then went on a 17-7 run over the next 6:33 to cut the lead down to three. The Royals then came all the way back to tie the game on their very next possession when Shari Laugen hit a 3-point basket with 6:20 remaining. After Cobber head coach Jessica Rahman called a timeout, CC connected on the next two baskets to take a four-point lead. Bethel would get as close as one point at 74-73 with 3:19 left to play before the Cobbers closed out the game on a 13-4 run by making 11 straight free throw attempts.

As a team, Concordia shot 43.9% (29-of-66) from the field and kept their perfect record intact when shooting above 35.0% from the field in the game. CC is 7-0 this season when they shoot better than 35.0% from the floor and 0-4 when they fail to reach that mark. The Cobbers also shot 28.6% (4-of-14) from 3-point range  and have not shot better than 29.0% from behind the arc for the past five games.

Bethel connected on 51.8% (29-of-56) of their attempts from the field and an even 50% (4-of-8) from 3-point range. The Royals were 15-of-21 (71.4%) from the free throw line.

The two teams finished with 34 rebounds each. Concordia turned the ball over 17 times as compared to 25 for Bethel. It is only the third time all season that CC has coughed the ball up less than 20 times in a game.

The Cobbers turned that eight turnover margin into a 29-15 advantage in points scored off of turnovers.

The Royals had most of their scoring come from their bench players. Reserve players Heather Davis and Annegret Nautsch posted season-high point totals in the loss. Davis finished with 21 points, while Nautsch tied her season-high with 20 points. She also had a game-high 10 rebounds to record her third double-double of the year.

As a team, the Bethel bench outscored their Cobber counterparts by a rather large 51-14 margin. Only four non-starting players from Concordia scored and none had more than six points.

The Cobbers will return home to host St. Thomas on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m. The game can be seen and heard live via the Cobber athletics website and will also feature live stats.
