Game Recap MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/08/07)-- Concordia knew it wasn't going to be easy. Heading into their game with Gustavus on Monday, the Cobbers had lost two straight conference games and were facing a Gustie team that had won eight of their first nine games of the season and were securely entrenched in second place in the league standings. In the end it took all of the Cobbers' experience and a game-winning layup by Melanie Hageman with seven seconds remaining to claim the hard-fought 71-69 victory. The game was finally decided in the seven seconds following the Hageman layup. After the Gusties called timeout to set up a play to pull out the win with the score at 70-69, Cobber senior guard Annie Keeley was able to steal the ball from Gustie guard Jess Vadnais after she inbounded the ball and then ran to recollect it to start the GAC offensive scheme. Keeley was then fouled and made one of the two free throws to push the score to 71-69. Gustavus' attempt to get off a last-second shot never came to about as the buzzer sounded before they could get off the 3-point attempt. Hageman, who has scored the game-winning basket in the final seconds of play for CC's last two wins, finished with a team-high 17 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Sara Sorbo stepped up huge for the Cobbers as she scored a season-high 17 points and went 6-of-7 from the floor. Her relentless energy and determination bailed the Concordia offense out on several occasions. The Gustavus terrific twosome of Bri Monahan and Vadnais once again carried the team throughout the entire 40 minutes. Monahan put up a game-high 26 points while Vadnais scored 25. The two combined for 74% of their team's total offensive output in the game. They were once again the only two players on the team to score in double figures. Erin Boese had a solid game around the basket. She finished with a game-high 10 rebounds. The two teams were virtually deadlocked in shooting statistics. The Cobbers shot 40.7% (22-of-54) from the floor, while the Gusties hit on a 40.4% (21-of-52 rate). CC was 6-of-21 (28.6%) from 3-point range and Gustavus went 3-of-13 (23.1%) from behind the arc. Both teams attempted 29 free throws in the game. Concordia made 72.4% of their free throw shots and the Gusties connected on 82.8% of their attempts. Concordia held a 35-30 edge in rebounding for the game. The only other two areas that CC had a decided advantage were in 2nd chance points and points from the bench. The Cobbers outscored GAC 12-4 in 2nd chance points and their bench outscored the Gustie non-starters 18-7. Concordia will now play at Bethel on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 7:45 p.m. The game can be heard live on the internet via the Cobber athletics website.
