(12/11/06)-- It was only fitting that a clash between the teams that competed for last season's MIAC tournament championship would come down to the final seconds. Concordia used a free throw with five seconds left in regulation by junior Melanie Hageman to edge Carleton 62-61 on Monday in Moorhead. The win propels the Cobbers into the Christmas break on a three-game winning streak and ups their MIAC record to 3-1 and their overall record to 5-2. The Knights suffer their second straight Monday night loss and fall to 3-2 in league play and 6-2 overall. Their only other loss came last Monday at league-leading St. Ben's. Hageman finished with a game-high 21 points and six rebounds for Concordia. Senior guard Annie Keeley was the only other Cobber player to finish with more than eight points. Keeley added 17 points and six rebounds. The Knights were led by Sarah Lincoln who scored 17 points and hauled down a game-high nine rebounds. Hannah Oken-Berg had 16 points and Anna Biewen finished with 10 points. The game went back-and-forth all night long as neither team was able to establish any kind of momentum in the 40 minutes of play. The game featured 15 ties and had 11 different lead changes. In the first half Concordia was able to get out to a four-point lead just before the break to establish the biggest lead of the entire first period. The trend of close play continued in the second half until the Cobbers went on an 8-2 run to grab an eight-point lead at 48-36 with 13:18 to play. After Carleton called a timeout, they responded by reeling the Cobbers back in by going on a 14-0 run to take a six-point lead of their own with 8:46 remaining in the game. Concordia then returned the favor by running off 11 of the next 15 points to take a one-point lead with 6:20 to play. Jessica Heintz' 3-point basket gave the Cobbers a 57-56 lead with just over six minutes to play and Concordia would never trail from that point forward. Carleton came back to tie the game two more times before Hageman's free throw sealed the game with five seconds to play. Carleton had one last chance to win the game at the buzzer but Annie Isler's leaning 3-point shot failed to hit the rim and Concordia escaped with the one-point win. For the game Carleton held a dramatic edge in shooting and rebounding but the Cobbers committed seven fewer turnovers and were able to take 15 more shots in the game. Concordia ended up shooting 35.4% (23-of-65) from the field and a mere 18.8% (3-of-16) from 3-point range. The Cobbers did hit on 13 of their 15 (86.7%) free throw attempts. The Knights shot 48.0% (24-of-50) from the floor and 33.3% (2-of-6) from behind the arc. Carleton held a 32-29 advantage in rebounds but committed 21 turnovers as opposed to only 14 for Concordia. The 14 miscues is a season low for the Cobbers. Concordia will take an extended break for the Christmas break and return to action on Jan. 3 when they play at Macalester at 7:45 p.m. |
