(11/18/06)-- Concordia used their experience and character to beat nationally-ranked Notre Dame College 77-63 to claim the championship of the Great Ships Tipoff Tournament hosted by the Apprentice School in Newport News, Va. on Saturday. The Cobbers and Falcons traded leads 14 times in the final half before Concordia scored 19 of the final 23 pints to pull out the victory. Notre Dame came into the game 3-0 and ranked No.17 in NAIA Division II. The Cobbers are now 2-0 on the season and have started the year with back-to-back wins for the first time since the 2003-04 season when they started the year 3-0. The story of the championship game was once again the inside/outside scoring force of the Cobbers. Melanie Hageman and Annie Keeley combined for 48 of the teams' 77 points (62.3%) as each player had a game-high 24 points. Hageman also added 11 rebounds and was named the tournament MVP. Keeley, who went 5-of-6 from 3-point range for the second straight game, had four rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Keeley shot 65.2% (15-of-23) from the field and 83.3% (10-of-12) from behind the arc for the two games. The championship game was just what head coach Jessica Rahman needed to start the season for Concordia. The two teams battled for a full 40 minutes in a game that saw 20 total lead changes and seven ties. The Cobbers rebounded in the second half after shooting only 12.5% from 3-point range and 36.7% from the floor in the first 20 minutes to knock down 16-of-33 (53.3%) from the field and 3-of-7 (42.9%) shots from behind the arc. Concordia held a seven-point lead at the break but was quickly caught in the second half as the Falcons scored 10 of the first 12 points in the period. From the 17:20 mark until the time the Cobbers pulled away with under six minutes to play in the game, the teams traded leads eight times, had the game tied on four occasions and played a stretch where neither team had a lead larger than six points. Besides Keeley and Hageman, Jenna Freudenberg and Leanne White had seven points each and Ashley King chipped in six more. Freudenberg also had four assists in the game. Sarah Krabbenhoft finished the game with eight rebounds and fouled out after scoring four points and adding four assists. As a team, Concordia outrebounded the Falcons 38-28. For the two-game tournament, the Cobbers held an 84-54 advantage in rebounding. Concordia will return home and then have an 11-day break before opening conference play against St. Ben's in St. Joseph, Minn. on Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
