MIAC Meet Day 1 Recap MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- Concordia senior diver Annie Cullen is half way to repeating her claim as the top diver in the MIAC. On Thursday, in the opening day of the MIAC Championship Meet at the University Aquatic Center, Cullen comfortably walked away with her second consecutive 3-meter title. The 20 team points she earned from the victory helped push the Cobbers into sixth place after the opening day's events. Concordia was seeded ninth heading into the championship meet. Freshman Shaina Fossum was the only other individual Concordia athlete to score points on the first day. She finished 14th in the 500-yard freestyle. The Cobber 200-yard freestyle relay team was the other big point-getter for Julie Lucier's squad. The relay team of Shannon Brown, Katie Lee, Dani Ree and Allison Bolgrean swam a season-best 1:44.32 in the finals to take home sixth place. That time was less than a second off the school record set back in 2004. Brown, Lee and Bolgrean then teamed with Fossum to finish ninth in the 400-yard medley relay, the final event of the first day. Cullen proved why she is the top diver in the conference and one of the top competitors in the country in the preliminary heat of the 3-meter event. She scored a 235.20 in the prelims and beat the nearest competitor by over 40 points. In the finals during the evening session of day 1, Cullen edged her way to a 228.70 and won the event by more than 14 points. Last year Cullen used the reverse point tactics to come away with the win. She scored a 200.60 to earn a spot in the finals and then jumped all over the competition by scoring a 235.75 in the finals to earn the win. Cullen will now wait a day in order to stake claim to the 1-meter competition. She will dive in the prelims of the 1-meter event in the morning on Saturday and then compete in the finals at night in the final session of the meet. Cullen finished second to teammate Emily Hall at last year's 1-meter event. |
