MIAC Meet Recap

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (2/16/08)-- Concordia saved its best for the last two events at the 2008 MIAC Champiosnhip Meet at the University of Minnesota on Saturday. The Cobbers scored 57 points in the final two events of the meet and rallied to pass St. Mary's and claim ninth place at the final meet of the season. It marks the third straight season that CC has finished in ninth place at the conference meet.

The Cobbers trailed the Cardinals by 16 points heading into the 1-meter diving and 400-yard freestyle relay events. The tradition-rich Cobber diving crew once again provided a spark for Concordia as the posted a 2-3 finish in the final individual event of the night. Lauren Trudeau claimed second place with a season-best score of 372.00. She was only .75 points off of first place. It is the second straight year Trudeau has finished in the top five in the 1-meter. Last year she was fifth with a final total of 323.65.

Teammate Amy Glubzinski finished third with a score of 328.80. She was able to hold off the fourth-place finisher in the event, claiming third by only 3.10 points.

Pumped up by the pair of top three finishes in the diving competition, the 400-yard freestyle team of Sarah Ament, Katie Coleman, Whitney Walters and Aleina Weisz swam a school-record 3:45.82 and finished seventh. The all-freshman quartet broke the old program record of 3:46.47 set in 2005.

The 400-yard freestyle relay record was just one of four school marks broken at the meet for the records. Weisz continued her outstanding first year by bettering her own records in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. She swam a 1:03.37 in the leadoff leg of the 400-yard medley relay to bust her old mark in the 100-yard backstroke by almost two seconds. On Saturday, she posted a time of 2:20.11 in the 200-yard backstroke to beat her old mark of 220.57 in the final dual meet of the year against Macalester.

Weisz finished the meet by also scoring team points in the 200-yard freestyle.

Junior Shaina Fossum came through for the upperclassmen on the team by setting a new school record in the 400-yard individual medley. She recorded a time of 4:59.59 on Friday to break the old mark of 5:01.30 she set last year at the conference meet.

The top point-getter for the Cobber swimming crew was Coleman. She had a breakout performance in her very first conference meet. Besides being part of the record-setting relay team, she also scored points in three different events at the meet. Her best finish was in the 1650-yard freestyle where she finished 12th in a time of 18:53.55. She also placed 14th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.53) and 16th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.82).

The only other Concordia athlete to score team points by finishing in the top 16 of an event was Chelsea Volna. For the second straight year, Volna placed in the top 15 in two different events. This year she was 12th in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:19.02 and 14th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:37.29).
