MIAC Meet Day 3 Recap

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (2/17/07)-- Concordia kept up the status quo in the final day of the MIAC Swimming and Diving Championship Meet. The Cobbers entered the third day in ninth place and ended the competition by finishing in ninth place. It is the second consecutive year that Concordia has finished in ninth place at the conference meet.

The Cobbers had five different individuals score team points on Saturday. They also had their 400-yard freestyle relay team finish eighth to earn 22 points.

Katie Lee capped her career by almost breaking her second school record in as many days. Lee swam a 2:20.36 in the "B" final of the 200-yard butterfly to finish 11th. Her time was less than once second off the school record set by Megan Johnson in 2003.

The long-distance tandem of Jessica Tollberg and Shaina Fossum started the final session of the meet off by claiming 15th and 16th in the grueling 1650-yard freestyle.Tollberg finished 15th in a time of 19:12.79 which was almost a minute faster than her seed time. Fossum posted a time of 19:23.18 and claimed 16th place.

Freshman diver Lauren Trudeau finished in the top eight in her second event of the meet. Trudeau was second after the prelims of the 1-meter competition and ended the event by placing fifth. Her score of 352.35 in the prelims set a Cobber freshman record.

Chelsea Volna served notice for the future by completing her successful freshman conference meet by placing 12th in the 200-yard breaststroke. She swam a 2:34.77 in the "B" final and was only 1.40 seconds behind the winner of the final heat. For Volna, it was her second top 15 performance of the meet.

The final event of the meet almost pushed the Cobbers into eighth place. The 400-yard freestyle team of Lee, Fossum, Volna and Tollberg posted a time of 3:49.28 and finished in eighth place. The CC quartet was 3.85 seconds away from seventh place which would have give the Cobbers two more points and pushed them past St. Kate's which defeated Concordia by 1.5 points.
