MIAC Meet Day 2 Recap

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (2/15/07)-- Concordia proved that their late Thursday stumble was just a mirage as they rattled off another record-breaking performance en route to scoring 76 team points in the second day of competition at the MIAC Swimming and Diving Championship Meet held at the University of Minnesota on Friday.

The second-day spurt pushes Concordia out of 11th place and jumps them into ninth place only 10 points shy of the top eight. The Cobbers have a total of 96 team points after the second day of competition at the championship meet. Gustavus continues to lead the event with a two-day total of 498 points.

The record-setting performance on Friday came from CC senior Katie Lee. Lee qualified for the "B" final in the 200-yard freestyle in the afternoon in a time of 2:00.86. That time was a mere .19 seconds off the school record set by Carrie Bunger in 1999. Determined not to fall shy of the mark in her final race, Lee broke the mark in the finals session by speeding to a 1:59.85 to break the seven-year-old record by almost a full second. Lee's time was good enough for 11th place in the event.

The top Cobber finisher on Day 2 was freshman Chelsea Volna. Fresh off her record-setting performance in the 400-yard individual medley on Thursday, Volna swam a 1:10.93 in the prelims of the 100-yard breaststroke and qualified for the "A" final. In the top heet in the evening session, Volna posted a 1:11.04 and finished in eighth place.

In that same event, freshman Karin Koening swam a 1:12.90 which tied the time for the final entrant in the "B" final in the evening session.

Concordia junior Dani Ree also scored valuable team points on Friday. Ree swam a 1:04.38 in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly and finished 16th. Her finals time was only 1.32 seconds off of the school record.

The final event of the second session was the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of Shaina Fossum, Jessica Tollberg, Rachael Hagen and Lee posted a time of 8:22.53 and finished in seventh place.

The Cobbers will finish off the three-day championship meet on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the University of Minnesota. The preliminary heats will start at 10:30 a.m. and the finals will begin at 6:30 p.m.
