MIAC Meet Day 1 Recap

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (2/15/07)-- The first day of the 2007 MIAC Championship Meet had its up and downs for the Concordia women's swimming and diving team. The up came in the form of freshman swimmer Chelsea Volna who broke a six-year-old freshman school record in the 200-yard individual medley by almost five full seconds. The down came in the form of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that was disqualified and cost the Cobbers significant team points in the conference standings.

At the end of the first day of competition, Concordia is looking up at the rest of the MIAC as they are in 11th place after the first of three days of events. The Cobbers have 20 team points after Thursday. Gustavus leads the event after the first day with a total team score of 198 points.

Volna broke the freshman record in the prelims of the 200-yard individual medley by posting a time of 2:19.87. That mark qualified her for the "B"-final in the evening. Volna then bettered her mark set in the afternoon by racing to a 2:18.65 in the night session. That time was good for 15th place in the conference.

Another up for Concordia was the form of freshman diver Lauren Trudeau who recovered from a jittery start to her first collegiate conference meet to place sixth in the 3-meter diving event. Trudeau was in eighth place after the prelims of the event but then found her way in the finals and posted a final score of 344.10. That mark was only 12.80 points behind the third-place finisher.

The 400-yard medley relay team of Shaina Fossum, Volna, Dani Ree and Katie Lee was the only other point-getter for the Cobbers in the opening day. The quartet swam a 4:19.01 and finished ninth.

Concordia will continue the three-day championship meet when they participate in the prelims on Friday, Feb. 16 at 10:30 and then in the finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
