Gameday Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Concordia found out what it's like to swat and kill one bee only to look up and see the rest of the hive not far behind. Less than 24 hours after battling 11th-ranked St. Thomas to a 2-2 overtime tie, the Cobbers were swarmed by a pestered Tommie attack and lost 9-1 on Saturday.

St. Thomas wasted little time in leaving little doubt if there was going to be a repeat performance by the upset-minded Cobbers. The Tommies scored three goals in a span of 2:03 midway through the first period and pushed the lead to 5-0 at the end of the first period.

Eight different Tommie players scored goals as the frustrated feeling of not being able to score on Friday was replaced by the confidence that anything that was thrown on net had a chance to go in.

Kevin Rollwagen was the only player to collect more than one goal. He netted the only two St. Thomas tallies in the second period to extend the lead to 7-0 midway through the second frame. Rollwagen's first goal was scored shorthanded. It was the second goal of the game that the Cobbers allowed while on the power play. They have now allowed 14 shorthanded goals on the year which is the most allowed by any men's team in NCAA Division I, II or III.

The lone Cobber bright spot came at the end of the second period when senior Brice Bergrren scored the only goal of the game for Concordia. The grinding forward finished off a play from Jake Dibble to grab his third goal of the year.

Concordia freshman goalie Jeremy Boniface went the distance and stopped 33 shots. St. Thomas split the goaltending duty. Treye Kettwick started the game and made six saves in the first 33:06 of action. He was replaced by Jeremy Earl who finished the game and stopped five of the six shots he faced.

The Cobbers will finish off their season next weekend when they host Augsburg on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7:00pm and then again on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2:00pm.
