Chris Howe was hired in the spring of 2008 and became only the third Concordia men's hockey coach in the past 40 years.

Before coming to Concordia Howe spent the previous five seasons as the top assistant at St. John’s University.

At the time of his hiring, Cobber Athletic Director Dr. Larry Papenfuss commented,“Chris has an infectious enthusiasm and energy that impressed everyone on campus. His passion for the game is evident in the success he had at St. John’s. We are very excited about the future of the men’s hockey team at Concordia.”

During his five seasons at St. John’s, the Johnnies won two MIAC championships and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2005. The St. John’s team compiled a 83-40-10 record during his tenure and earned a spot in the MIAC playoffs in four of the five seasons.

In addition to his duties as assistant coach at St. John’s, Howe is the Alternative School Director at Sartell High School in Sartell, Minn. Before coming to St. John’s, Howe served as a volunteer assistant coach for St. Cloud State University under head coach Craig Dahl.

A native of St. Cloud, Minn., Howe received his bachelor’s degree in social studies and secondary education from St. John’s University in 1999. He played hockey for St. John’s from 1996 to 1999 and was part of a group that won more than 70 games and went to the NCAA Division III national semifinals in 1997. Following his playing career, Howe returned to St. John’s and was the head junior varsity coach. He then went on to become the assistant boys’ coach at St. Cloud Apollo from 2000 to 2002. He has also served as a head coach at the USA Hockey Select National Festival.
