ST. PETER, Minn. (2/6/10)-- The Cobber playoff hopes were dealt a hard hit to the body on Saturday as Concordia fell 2-0 to No.8-ranked Gustavus in St. Peter. The loss drops CC to 4-6-4 in the MIAC and knocks Concordia down to a tie for sixth place in the league standings.

The game was a testament for college hockey as the two teams battled up and down the ice and were only whistled for a combined 10 penalties.

The first period was a scoreless affair with Gustavus holding an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. The game would change in the second period when DIII leading scorer David Martinson stepped out of the penalty box after taking a roughing penalty and found the puck right on his stick with no one to beat but Cobber goalie Jacob Vatnsdal. Martinson skated in and snapped home the eventual game winner at the 3:27 mark. It would be the first of his two goals on the day as he accounted for the only scoring in the game.

Concordia remained within one goal all the way through the second period and deep into the third as they tried to come up with the game-tying goal but on each successive try were thwarted by GAC goalie Josh Swartout. Swartout kept the Cobbers off the board and then Martinson finished off his five-point weekend by getting his 23rd goal of the year at 18:50.

Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play. Concordia did not score in their only power play of the entire game and Gustavus was held scoreless in their five attempts.

The Gusties outshot the Cobbers 33-19 for the game. Vatnsdal made 31 saves on the day while Swartout stopped all 19 shots he faced to earn his second shutout of the year. Swartout stopped 45 of the 46 shots he faced on the weekend, recorded both wins in the series and is now 14-1-2 on the season.

Concordia will now have a two-week break before finishing off the regular season on Feb. 19 and 20 at Hamline.
