ST. PETER, Minn. (2/5/10)--If college hockey games were decided after 20 minutes then Concordia would have come away with a huge win on Friday. Unfortunately the teams have to play a full 60 minutes and, after leading 1-0 after one period, the Cobbers gave up five consecutive goals to No.8-ranked Gustavus and lost 5-1 in St. Peter. The loss starts to whittle away at the Cobbers' playoff hopes. Concordia is now 4-5-4 in the conference and drops out of a fourth-place tie and falls to fifth place in the MIAC standings. CC has only three games remaining in the regular season and will need to pick up points in at least two games. The Gusties run their unbeaten string to six games and are now 14-4-2 and 8-1-2 in league play. GAC has only lost once in their last 13 games and regains first place in the conference standings after second-place Hamline edged ahead of the Gusties after playing a rare midweek league game. The first period flew by as the two teams combined to take only one penalty and the play went up and down the ice. The Cobbers broke on top first when Aaron Wheeler scored at 16:58 on an assist from Nick Thielen. Little did Concordia know that Wheeler's fifth goal of the year would be their last in the game. Wheeler has now had a t least one point in five of the past six games. The Cobbers took a 1-0 lead into the break and held the same advantage until the fifth minute of play in the second period. That's when the Gustavus scoring spree would take over. GAC would score three times in the second frame and add two more in the first eight minutes of the third to come away with the four-goal win. All three of the goals in the second period were of the even-strength variety. David Martinson tied the game at 4:35 with his DIII-leading 21st goal of the season. Martinson would add two assists in the game and now has 35 points on the year. In conference play he has 17 goals and nine assists for 26 points. It took Gustavus less than four minutes to get the game-winning goal. Ross Ring-Jarvi notched his 10th goal of the year, and second game winner, at 8:05. Ring-Jarvi would add another goal at the 5:38 mark of the third period two complete his two-goal game. The Gusties finished of their trio of goals in the middle frame at 12:37 when Brad Wieck netted his eighth goal of the year. Wieck would also finish off the scoring in third period when he matched Ring-Jarvi's two-goal performance with a tally at the 8:00 mark. Neither team was able to score on the power play in the game. Concordia was 0-for-3 on the man advantage and the Cobber penalty kill unit held Gustavus scoreless in their five power play attempts. The Gusties outshot Concordia 38-26 for the game. CC goalie Jacob Vatnsdal made 33 saves while Gustie goalie Josh Stewart stopped 26 shots to earn his 13th win of the year. Stewart is now 13-1-2 on the year. The two teams will finish off their two-game series on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. at the Don Roberts Ice Rink.
