MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/13/09)-- Concordia broke open their MIAC conference opener with St. Mary's on Friday with three, three-period goals and skated to a 6-3 win in Moorhead. It's the Cobbers first win of the season and gives CC two conference wins in their past three league games. The Cardinals remain winless on the season as they fall to 0-5.

Concordia got two goals each from Shawn Goos and Nick Thielen and freshman goalie Jacob Vatnsdal earned his first collegiate win in his second career start.

The teams traded power play goals in the first 15 minutes of the opening period. Casey Olson scored for the Cobbers at 8:21 and then Eric Tenvoorde followed suit for SMU with a power play goal at 14:10.

Thielen would then give Concordia a 2-1 lead heading into the break when he scored at 18:53.

St. Mary's would even the score at 2-2 at 9:18 of the second period before the Cobbers would explode for four straight goals to put the game out of reach. Goos scored the first of his two goals to get CC started on the run. He tallied his first goal of the year at 12:14 and the Cobbers would never trail for the remainder of the game.

Marc Harrie scored in the first minute of the third period and then Goos and Thielen finished off the scoring for Concordia with goals 1:13 apart midway through the frame.

Vatnsdal finished with 32 saves on the night to pick up the win. St. Mary's goalie Greg Moore made 16 saves in the losing effort.

The two teams will finish off their two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m.
