SUPERIOR, Wis. (11/06/09)-- Concordia got their first taste of NCHA hockey in 2009-10 and it was hard to swallow as the Cobbers were outgunned 7-2 by UW-Superior in Superior, Wis. on Friday. The loss leaves CC still looking for their first win of the season as they drop to 0-3-0. Superior wins for the first time and moves to 1-2-0.

The Yellowjackets, who ranked fourth in the USCHO preseason national poll, were coming off two losses in the opening weekend against UW-River Falls and had a little buzz in their step. Superior took control of the game in the first three minutes of play as they stormed the CC end for a pair of even strength goals. The Yellowjackets would add a third midway through the period and take a 3-0 lead into the break.

They started the second frame the same way they opened the game, scoring a lightning quick goal to keep Concordia at bay. Their fourth goal of the game came just :43 second into the second period. Superior added a fifth before the Cobbers could counter with their first. Nick Thielen got Concordia on the board when he scored a power play goal at 8:52 on an assist from Pat Deitz.

The Cobbers got to within 5-2 at the start of the third period when defenseman Mark Johnson scored his first goal of the season at the 1:12 mark. Unfortunately for CC that would be the end of the scoring and then Superior added a pair of goals less than two minutes apart in the middle of the period.

For the game Superior outshot Concordia 43-28. The Cobbers were 1-for-5 on the power as Thielen snapped CC's 0-for-11 streak in man-advantage situations to start the season. Superior was 1-for-2 on the power play as the Cobbers took only three penalties in the entire game.

Ole Bronbo started in goal for Concordia and played the first 25:43. He allowed five goals and made 14 saves. Freshman Jacob Vatnsdal entered the game in the second period and made 22 saves in the final 34:17. Superior goalie Jim Patterson stopped 26 shots to pick up his first win of the year.

Concordia will finish off their two-game NCHA road trip when they play at St. Scholastica on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.
