BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (11/01/09)-- Concordia got off to a storybook start in their second game of the season against Hamline on Sunday but couldn't finish off the Pipers in the third period and lost 2-1 in the final game of the MIAC Showcase in Bloomington.

A day after it took the Cobbers two periods to get their offense on track, CC bolted out of the gate by scoring a goal in the first 30 seconds of play against Hamline. Pat Deitz collected his third goal in the first two games when he finished off a pass from Erick Galt at the :22 second mark to give Concordia a very early 1-0 lead.

The game would stay that way all the way until the start of the third period when the Pipers scored a power play goal just 55 seconds into the frame. The score didn't stay deadlocked for very long as Hamline scored the eventual game winner at the 2:00 mark .

Concordia was unable to come up with the equalizer despite having a trio of power play chances in the final 20 minutes of play. The Cobbers even had a 5-on-3 situation for almost two full minutes after a Hamline player was given a five-minute checking from behind major at the 14:47 mark. Concordia could only muster three shots with none on net during the two-man advantage but then pumped the HU goal for eight shots in the remaining three minutes of 5-on-4 hockey. Unfortunately they couldn't get a puck behind Hamline goalie Beau Christian and ended up falling 2-1.

In the game, the Cobbers were outshot 30-23. Concordia was 0-for-3 on the power play and finished the weekend 0-for-7 in man-advantage situations. CC took 11 penalties in the game but held the Pipers to only 1-for-10 in power play chances.

Concordia freshman goalie Jacob Vatnsdal made 28 saves in his collegiate debut while Christian stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced for the Pipers.

The Cobbers will stay on the road and face a pair of nationally ranked NCHA teams next weekend. CC will play at No.4-ranked UW-Superior on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and then face No.13-ranked St. Scholastica on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.
