Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/14/09)-- In a perfect world the Cobbers would have stormed into the Moorhead Youth Rink on Saturday, played like Knights for 60 minutes and rode off into the sunset on their white horses with a season-ending sweep over Gustavus. Unfortunately someone forgot to cue the Gusties into the screenplay and Concordia suffered through a horror movie-like 8-1 loss in the season finale.
After controlling the Gustie offense with disciplined play in their defensive end on Friday, the Cobbers were unable to control Gustavus in their own end and gave up at least two goals in each period. The Gusties, playing for revenge from Friday's loss, put up 52 shots on goal. That total is a season-high for Gustavus and the most allowed by CC since they gave up 61 to the Gusties at the end of last season.
The bright spot for Concordia in the game came in the third period when seniors Cory Johnson and Alec Holen combined to score the lone CC goal. Holen notched his ninth goal of the year on the assist from Johnson. The goal helped Holen earn his 20th point of the season and tie him with Marc Harrie for the team lead in points for the year. It is also the second time in his career that Holen has scored at least 20 points in a season.
The game was an offensive outburst from the opening period. The two teams combined to put 30 shots on net in the first 20 minutes after only having 32 in the first and third periods combined in Friday night's tight checking contest. Gustavus got on the board at the 4:13 mark and then added the second goal of the period at 14:42.
That would be all the Gusties would need as goalie Matt Lopes stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced in the game to earn his seventh win of the season.
Gustavus tacked on two more goals in the second period and erupted for four more before the Cobbers were able to get on the board with just under 5:00 to play in the game.
Concordia used a pair of netminders in the game. Joe Duncan, who earned his first collegiate win Friday's game, started and played the first 14:42. He made 13 saves and then gave way to Mike Persson who played the final 45:15 and turned aside 31 shots.
The Cobbers were 1-for-4 on the power play but couldn't hold the Gusties on the penalty kill. GAC scored five power play goals in the game and went 5-for-8 in man-advantage situations.
