Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/13/09)-- Concordia used a little old and a whole "lotta" new as they scored a short-handed goal, a power play goal and an even strength goal to beat Gustavus 3-1 in Moorhead on Friday. The Cobbers got a goal from one senior and two freshmen and rookie goalie Joe Duncan made 30 saves to earn his first collegiate victory.
The two teams skated through a scoreless first period with both squads having opportunities to score. Concordia had a 5-on-3 power play in the final minute of the period but wasn't able to get any quality chances on the Gustie goal.
The game stayed deadlocked at 0-0 until the fifth minute of the second period. That's when freshman Marc Harrie picked off a missed clearing attempt by Gustavus goalie Josh Swartout and fired it into the net. The Cobbers were killing off a penalty at the time and Swartout appeared to be trying to play a pass up ice to one of his teammates. The goal would be the first of three points on the night for Harrie. It was his team-leading ninth goal of the year.
Concordia would hold onto the 1-0 lead through two periods and then add to the margin when Cory Johnson scored at 3:58 of the final frame whole CC was on the power play. For Johnson it was his fifth goal of the year. Harrie picked up the lone assist. The Cobbers then made it 3-0 midway through the period when Nick Thielen cashed in on his third goal in the last three games. Harrie and Ben Nelson were credited with the assists on the score at 12:22. The assist for Harrie pushed his team-leading point total to 20. He becomes the first 20-point scorer for the Cobbers and first since the 2006-07 season.
Gustavus (13-9-0/8-5-0 MIAC) would get a goal back just over one minute after Thielen's tally. Eric Bighman scored his 10th goal of the year at 13:25 to break up the shutout attempt of Duncan.
The Gusties outshot the Cobbers 31-27 in the game. That is in contrast to the last three games where Concordia has outshot their opponents but fell short on the scoreboard. Swartout finished the game with 24 saves.
Concordia was 1-for-5 on the power play and the Gusties were held scoreless in their four attempts. The Cobbers even failed to convert on a penalty shot. Alec Holen was hooked down from behind on a breakaway at the 8:09 mark of the third period but then shot the puck directly into Swartout on the ensuing penalty shot.
The two teams will finish of the series on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Youth Rink. It will be the final game in the 2008-09 season for Concordia.
