Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/06/09)-- Concordia continues to battle and battle and push every conference team to the limit but can't find a way to post a victory. That was once again the case on Saturday against St. John's. The Cobbers clawed their way back from a two-goal deficit in the second half of the third period to tie the game at 2-2 only to see their hard work go by the way side when the Johnnies scored the game-winning goal with only :25 seconds to play in overtime to claim the 3-2 win.
The loss is the seventh of the season for the Cobbers by two or fewer goals against conference opponents. Overall it is the sixth straight defeat for Concordia. CC is now 3-18-2 overall and 1-11-2 in conference play.
St. John's (8-12-1/5-6-1) wins for the fourth time in the past five games and stays within striking distance of the fifth, and final, playoff spot. The Johnnies broke open the scoreless tie late in the period when they tallied the first goal of the game at 14:59. The goal came on the power play and was one of two on the day for SJU.
The Johnnies added to their lead in the beginning of the third period. They scored at 2:10 to take a 2-0 lead even though they were being outshot 25-16 in the game.
Concordia started to cut into the lead midway through the final frame. Nick Thielen scored his second goal of the series and second of the season at 10:54 and CC was back in the game. The score would stay at 2-1 until the Cobbers pulled their goalie with 1:50 to play. St. John's was then whistled for a penalty and CC took advantage when Erick Galt pounded home his third goal of the season at 18:44.
The game turned in favor for the Johnnies in the middle of the overtime period. Most of the time in overtime the players are allowed to play and penalties are few and far between. However, on Saturday the Cobbers were called for a pair of penalties less than :10 seconds apart at the back end of the extra session and St. John's made the most of the situation. CC tried to kill off the 5-on-3 situation and almost accomplished the feat but SJU was able to get the game winner with only :25 seconds left to play.
Concordia ended up outshooting the Johnnies for the second straight game. CC outshot St. John's 38-31 despite being outshot 8-1 in overtime. CC netminder Mike Persson made 28 saves in the game. SJU goalie Vince Wheeler stopped 36 shots on the game and 70 for the weekend.
The Cobbers were 1-for-9 on the power play in the game. SJU was 2-for-4 for the game and 3-for-6 in the series.
Concordia will finish off the 2008-09 season when they host Gustavus on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13-14. Both games will be played at the Moorhead Youth Rink.
