Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/06/09)-- Every time Concordia got to within one goal of St. John's on Friday, the Johnnies had an answer and kept the Cobbers from tying the game as SJU went on to claim a 6-3 win in Moorhead. Concordia brought the game to within one goal at 2-1, 3-2 and then finally at 4-3 before St. John's added the final two goals of the game to come away with the win.
The loss is the fourth straight for the Cobbers and drops their record to 3-17-2 in overall games and 1-10-2 in the MIAC. The Johnnies stay in the hunt for the fifth MIAC playoff spot as they move to 7-12-1 overall and 4-6-1 in league play. SJU has now won four of their last five games and is only three points behind fifth-place Bethel in the race for the final playoff berth.
The game couldn't have started any worse for the Cobbers as they allowed a pair of goals in the first 5:36 of the opening period. St. John's scored two goals on their first two shots on net. Brent Broderson scored his fifth goal of the year at 3:56 and then Grant Ellena followed with a power play goal at the 5:36 mark.
Concordia would regroup in the period and actually outshoot the Johnnies 12-11 in the first 20 minutes of play. The Cobbers cut the margin to one for the first time at the start of the second period. Freshman Ben Nelson raced in on goal on a breakaway after a poor clearing attempt and faked to his backhand before lifting the puck into the top of the net for his first collegiate goal. Marc Harrie was credited with the assist on the goal at 5:09. Unfortunately for CC the one-goal deficit would not last long as the Johnnies scored 1:13 later when Pat Connelly knocked home his team-leading 10th goal of the year at 6:22 after he received the puck on a rebound.
The game would stay at 3-1 until the third period. Nelson slammed home his second goal of the game at 4:10 to bring the Cobbers to within one at 3-2. Harrie picked up his second assist and Erick Galt also added a helper on the play. The first pivotal goal of the third period would come over seven minutes later when Mike Wallgren scored at 11:18 to put St. John's up 4-2. CC would quickly answer when Nick Thielen scored his first collegiate goal at 12:24 to get Concordia to within one goal. Knut Bitustoeyl had the assist on the goal. The final blow to the Cobbers' comeback chances came at 17:10 when Jake Hipp scored the first of his two goals. Hipp would add an empty net goal at 19:05 to bring the final margin to 6-3.
Concordia ended up outshooting the Johnnies 37-23 in the game. Cobber goalie Mike Persson made 17 saves while SJU netminder Vince Wheeler stopped 34 shots to earn his sixth win of the year.
The Cobbers were 0-for-6 on the power play in the game and are now 0-for-9 on the man advantage in the last two games. St. John's scored one goal in their only two power play chances.
The two teams will finish off the two-game series on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
