ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/24/09)--
Alex Arnason broke a scoreless tie with a goal with 4:36 left in the third period and the host Tommies (8-7-2 overall, 5-2-1 MIAC) quickly added two more goals to post a 3-0 victory over Concordia-Moorhead (3-14-2, 1-7-2) in MIAC men's hockey play Saturday afternoon in Mendota Heights.
St. Thomas now has 999 all-time victories in men's hockey and is poised to become the first current Division III program to reach 1,000 wins.
UST freshman goalie Cary Wood improved to 4-0 as a starter as he had 21 saves in the shutout win. With the score tied 0-0 with 6:00 to go, Wood made an impressive glove save to knock away a puck headed for net. Wood stopped 27 of 29 shots in Friday's 4-2 victory. After scoring 1:45 into Friday's game, Concordia managed just one goal off Wood in the next 100:15 on the clock.
Rob Johnson scored 47 seconds after Arnason's goal for a 2-0 lead, and Andrew Kappers added a power-play goal woth 2:02 left for the three-goal cushion.
Johnson had a goal and an assist and Adam Davis had three assists for the Tommies, now 12-1-2 on home ice since February 2008. St. Thomas is now 11-0-1 against the Cobbers since November 2002.
The hard-fought game featured several coincidental penalties but the Cobbers had just one power-play in the game. The Tommies were 1-for-4 on their power play attempts.
St. Thomas held a 30-22 edge in shots on goal for the game. Cobber goalie Mike Persson made 27 saves in the losing effort.
Concordia will stay on their month-long road trip when they play at Augsburg on Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31.
