Gameday Game Recap:
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (12/14/08)--
Concordia conceded the game-winning goal with less than three minutes to play in the game and fell 3-2 to St. John's on Sunday in a non-conference game for both teams. The Cobbers had tied the game midway through the third period before allowing the final goal with 2:59 to play in regulation.
The loss sends the Cobbers into the Christmas break with a 1-10-2 overall record. The Johnnies are now 3-8-1 on the year. The one-goal loss is the fifth of the year for Concordia.
Concordia jumped on the board first in the game when senior forward Cory Johnson bagged his second goal of the year at the 8:45 mark of the opening period. Mark Johnson and Shawn Goos were given the assists on the even-strength goal. St, John's then tied the game less than three minutes later when they also scored an even-strength goal at 11:27.
The two teams would skate through more than 25 minutes without another goal as both defenses tightened and both goalies refused to be beaten. SJU finally broke the tie at the 14:28 mark of the second period.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the final period, CC was able to get the equalizer when freshman Marc Harrie notched his second goal of the weekend. Knut Bitustoeyl and Erick Galt were credited with the assists on the goal at 8:36. That set the stage for the Johnnies' game-winner with less than three minutes to play.
Neither team was able to connect on a power play goal in the game. Concordia went 0-for-8 on the man-advantage situation and SJU was 0-for-7. The Cobbers were whistled for nine penalties for 26 penalty minutes and St. John's took 10 penalties for 20 penalty minutes.
Concordia split the goaltending duties. Elliot Okland played the first 4:58 of the game and left with four saves after suffering an injury on a play where a St. John's player was given a penalty for charging the goalie. Mike Persson came on in relief and stopped 28 shots but was saddled with his third loss of the season. Johnnie netminder Vince Wheeler made 26 saves to earn his second straight win of the weekend.
The Cobbers will now have a three-week break for the holiday break. CC will return to action when they host UW-River Falls on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
